Just how good are these lights guys and what makes them work so well ? Totally superior to a similar sized normal torch ?

Technically I have no idea, but I ride at night down country paths, total darkness and the above light is enough to light up a good distance in front and to the side.

Only down side is the battery life, maybe an hour and half .. but spares are light to carry ..

I use one at work and they are much better than a 3 cell led maglite and much smaller. They are also more robust than the led maglite. I dropped the maglite once and the led bulb blew. I hav edropped the lenser a few times and no problems at all.

I use one to walk the dog round our unlit village, small and very powerful. It has a beam adjuster to widen narrow the beam as well. Mine looks like the one plod uses.

Wife carries it around most of the time in her handbag it's that small

I had one (till someone swiped it when camping one night). It was OK - better than a maglight, but when I went for the replacement I decided on the Cree Trust Fire TR-801

Much cheaper, and brilliant light - 230 lumens from its Q5 LED. Smaller than the Lenzer. Construction is first rate
