You could try removing the actuator pipe, and see if turbo boosts. Be careful when doing this, keep an eye on your boost gauge. Dont let it boost too much. Back off as soon as it hits 14psi for eg.

problem most likely lies with piework or boost control.

so if i take the pipe of the actuator do i need to clamp closed or leave it open
and if i hit the target boost of 16.5 psi would this mean the boost solenoid is faulty ??

and what if it still wont boost past 7-8psi then what could it be???

steve

Just pull pipe off actuator nipple, no need to clamp or anything. What should happen is that actuator will stay shut, and allow turbo to spin out. Be careful when doing this, as you effectively have no boost control, and if turbo is working well it will continue to build boost very quickly.

Once you have determined that the turbo is willing to boost with no undue noises etc, then you know problem lies somewhere else. Like you say, it could be possible that the solenoid is faulty.

Another possibility is spark plugs or spark related. Have you noticed any misfire or hesitancy?

just another thought i had
when i cleaned the solenoid i sprayed brake cleaner in all the pipes
connected the diagnostic plugs and switched the ignition on
should it have sprayed out profusly or should it just dribble out??

quick update

have just taken the pipe of the actuator
and **** me the turbo spins up no bother
first time ive seen 14psi for a while now

so im think the problem lies either with the boost solenoid or the pipes coming from it
in which pipe is the small restrictor
as i cant find it

Its worth pulling each pipe off one at a time and check for blockages or oil contamination.

If your car has the 3 port solenoid, there will probably no restrictor.
