RICHARD IRONS BRAVERY AWARD
Many of you from the Worcs area may remember Richard Irons He worked for Minardi at Ledbury. It may one some reasons why he's been not seen for a while
saw this in abridged version in The local newspaper.
A LEDBURY man hit with an iron bar trying to stop an assault on a woman received a Chief Constable's Commendation on Monday
Richard Irons was nominated for the honour by Victim Support and police have praised his selfless and brave actions.
The incident left Mr Irons with severe facial injuries, including a number of his teeth embedded in his tongue.
Mr Irons tried to intervene when he came to the aid of a woman who was being threatened by a man with an iron bar outside the Royal Oak pub in The Southend, in September last year.
Mr Irons, 34, required hospital treatment after being struck in the face and the back of his head, a wound that required nine stitches
Mr Irons said he was "certainly pleased" by the award and said he would do the same thing again.
He said: "If that was my daughter, I'd want someone to do something. I have been brought up to know what is right and wrong.
"I saw a woman going down on the ground, holding her hands up. You don't beat up women."
But Mr Irons' bravery came at a considerable cost.
He said: "I've had plastic surgery on both my lips. It's certainly a lot better now, but it's cost me an absolute fortune."
