Hi,

This was my little project this saturday..!!

Total cost £10...

First off i went to my local scrap yard and found an old shape polo and bought the washer bottle and washer motor.. while i was there i got some tubing from the washer jet set up ans some T pieces.... cost £4

First off a made a bracket to fit the washer bottle to the car.. unfortunetly i had to move my alarm module as it was in the way.....

I then run the tubing to the intercooler intake.... i wired it up to a switch in the car which i had lying around... you can get them from halfords for £2.... Then i bought some washer jets from halford (ripspeed) £5.99 however i think i may need some jets that give off a higher desity spray... but its ok for now...

here are some pics...

nice one, i've been toying with the idea the last couple of weeks.
my turbo hasn't got aircon fitted, so i was going to put the washer bottle in that area.

Hi,

I need to get a better set of nozzles really but... if ive been sat in trafic for a bit and i switch the spray on i can feel a difference pulling away, which is what i wanted it for really....... as summer is on the way....

It only took me about 3 hours to fit...and anyone can do it.....

I need to thank JONNY GAV for letting me look at his system and giving me the inspiration to do it.... ive been thinking about doing it for ages and yesterday thought fu** it....

Get yourselfs down to the scrap yard and halfords today..!!

nice one dan

one more thing, fit a couple of none return valves before the washer jets(stops the water draining back into the washer bottle)

fitting my boost activated switch today so will keep you posted on the results.

one more tip,add 20% alcohol to your washer bottle(doubles the cooling effect of the spray)

Cheers mate..... think i will pop down to halford again to get one of the non return valves..... went out in it last night and nearly used all the water.... it goes down pretty quick....

This is going to be an expensive project sticking a bottle of vodka in there every trip.... LOL or may be some industrial methelated spirits...

i get pure alcohol from work but i suppose vodka would do the trick.

you can also run another pipe into the car with a tap on the end(incar vodka dispenser )

been looking in garden centres for some sort of nozzles with a finer spray

Good thinking.... someone was on about using the type of spray nozzles that you get for spraying plants.... failing that i think graham goode sell some for aabout £10 + VAT each..

How much was your pressure switch and how does it work.... can you have the manual switch as well..??

Keep us posted...

jonny,

I was just thinking.... this is a bit of a cheap option but.... do you recon if there was a way of putting some solder over the holes on our washer jets then put a pin ***** in the solder do you think this would work...

Unhappy

the spray wouldn`t come out any finer, you would need a more powerful pump for that.

How about fitting a microswitch on the floor, under the accelerator, so that it sprays at WOT (you could probably mount it in the rubber stopper that's on the floor).

You could also put a 2-position switch on the dash, which could switch between 'Manual' mode and 'WOT' mode.

You can buy a pressue switch that kicks the water spray in when a desired boost pressure is reached... Jonny gav has this set up..

Just an idea - I fitted a microswitch under the pedal 'cos I wanted the spray to start BEFORE it reached boost so the charge had a better chance of cooling. It operates at about 3/4 throttle.

I use mercury tilt switch on the throttle butterfly on my Saab to operate an intercooler fan via a delay circuit. It keeps running for 30sec after you lift off. That is when intercooler temp is found to be highest, actually soon after the boost event when the core has saturated.

My intercooler water spray is controlled by a bespoke Autospeed controller, it takes injector pulse width, ambient temp, and intercooler temp as inputs.

Sorry just seen the thread from a link in Drivetrain. I received the Prodrive IC spray jets the other day - prob the same as the STi once and fitted them last night. Still trying to get the hose connectors today- just linked to headlight washer motor and will use mainly on track. WI is not out of the question, but probably a lot of faff for my needs.

A question for you :

Is the intension to cool the intercooler or the air hitting the intercooler, and then that cooling the intercooler?

As an intercooler covered in water with coolish air hitting it should cool down just as quick surely as with a very fine or just a fine spray?

Explain? please...

Cheers

They were about £12 for two. Subaru Nozzle 86636FA120 (2 required). You may be able to get them via Prodrive if you can get them to speak to you.

Haven't actually hooked them up yet, but presumably they will give the right spray pattern and misting.
