Default World One Cars - A Nostalgic Perspective

Greetings all,

First off, I just want to say hello from our side of the Atlantic My name is Armin and you might have seen my name in the pages of Subiesport Magazine. I've been working here at World One Performance since 2006, but had been a customer since they opened up shop in 2002. Since then, I've become good friends with Garret (World One's owner), and over the years, he helped create a mecca for Subaru performance in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Along the way, he picked up a few dedicated customers and employees who shared his vision, and thus their car was able to wear the "World One Performance" banner with pride. This thread is a nostalgic look down memory lane, and new parts will be posted here over time. Thus, we begin with...

Part I: The Bat Car

Starting in 2002, Ivan McKinley (aka "iv30" or "ivster" here on ScoobyNet) quickly became the Subaru "man to beat" at all the local car shows. His 2002 WRX had all of the most cutting edge parts, much of which you wouldn't even think you'd see stateside. As 2003 came along, Ivan forged a relationship with the then-startup World One Performance, which ensured his dominance in the local Subaru car show scene for the next two years. "The Bat Car," as he so called it, was one of the first Subarus in the country (and more than likely, the first here in the Northwest) to reach TurboXS Stage 4+, complete with a VF34, Greddy FMIC, and all the supporting mods. Along with this, he had the much-coveted StopTech BBK (which was rarely seen in 2003, at least around here), the only full and genuine Zero/Sports body kit in the country, as well as a Kaminari hood, long before most people even knew what a reverse scoop was. He started off with 5zigen FN01R-Cs, but eventually moved up to Advan RCIIs, to completely emulate the actual Zero/Sports car.

My apologies for these pics, since I took these with my old Nikon Coolpix 4500 and they're 3 years old This was long before I even picked up any sort of SLR camera...

Part II: "As Good as it Gets"

"As Good as it Gets" was the title bestowed upon the Super Street article that featured Garret's own personal STi. Commonly known as "The World One STi," Garret's car was among the first STis in the country to break the 400 whp barrier, thanks to an FP Green and Phil from Element Tuning's expertise. It was a prototype Hydra and Gary Sheehan's awesome driving that catapulted the World One STi to take 2nd in its class and 6th place overall at the very first Primedia Time Attack in 2004, bested only by Sparco's Evo in its class. The Do-Luck bodykit was the only one in the country for a long time, along with the high-post wing that although generated much controversy, proved to be a necessary aerodynamic part for the track, as noted by Gary Sheehan himself. Also equipped on this car was StopTech's first STi BBK with silver calipers, along with the extremely light weight and hollow-cast Advan TC-IIs. There was no question this car was fast on the track, but it also proved itself on the show circuit as well, taking home a number of trophies, including 1st Place Subaru at the Global Import Car Show in September 2004. Much of this was in part due to the red Bride Brix seats and a custom Diamond Audio sound system. Onto the pics...

Part III: The New Bat Car

At the end of 2003, Ivan McKinley had decided to move back home to Ireland, where much of his family still reside. He sold his Bat Car to Garret, and while over there he purchased one of his dream cars from Litchfield Motorsports: a Subaru WRX STi Spec C Type RA. It was red, it was fast, and it was everything he wanted out of a Subaru. However, in mid 2004 Ivan decided to move back to the Pacific Northwest, and since he couldn't take his Spec C Type RA with him, he fixed his Subaru addiction with the closest thing he could find -- a 2004 USDM STi. Since he had to give up his dream car, Ivan's wife at the time pretty much gave the OK to build up this car to whatever he wanted, thus Ivan wasted no time in the modding. Among the first things done was a full Chargespeed v2 body kit, SR40 turbo upgrade with a Perrin FMIC, a carbon fiber reverse scoop, and a full Spec C interior and roof vent. He started off with a set of bronze Work Emotion CRs, but in a matter of months moved up to Volk LE28Ns in gold. He also opted to ditch the stock STi wing for a Mine's spoiler, being among the first in the country to do so.

The New Bat Car made a name for itself quickly, winning trophies and gracing the pages of Import Racer as photographer Josh Mackey's first major magazine appearance. Ivan eventually decided to move to Texas, where he brought The New Bat Car with him, winning even more shows and continuing his success. Since then, the car's been parted out and Ivan's now rolling in one of the most modified Audi A3s in the country, but his heart still yearns for Subarus. Pics:

Part IV: The Seattle Skyline

In 2004, World One Performance finally opened its own shop here in Seattle. With a new shop, Garret now had to hire new employees. He asked me if I knew anyone who had experience working behind an import shop counter, and my answer was simple: Alex Cheang.

I went to middle school and high school with Alex, and after I graduated from college, I learned that he was working behind the counter at the (in)famous Ultraspeed, and then moving on to Garage SPL, one of Seattle's premier import tuner shops back in 2001. I credit him a great deal in helping me get into cars and Subarus, since he was always happy to hook up a friend. In any case, after Garage SPL closed down, he searched for a new home and as luck would have it, that new home became World One Performance.

Upon starting at World One, Alex brought in a totally different type of AWD vehicle: a 1990 Skyline R32 GT-R. This car was a factory mutant of sorts...with just a turboback exhaust, intake, and a raise in boost, he broke into 11s at the track with a 11.9 time. Other than the old-school BBS wheels, nothing much else was done to it. However, Garret and Alex had big plans, to this day, are still ongoing.

Outfitted with a full Do-Luck body kit, hood, and spoiler, a color change to purple, full welded-in roll cage, Enkei wheels, StopTechs all around, gigantic HKS turbos and FMIC...the plan for this car was to make the ultimate Time Attack machine. The motor was also built from the ground up, easily pushing over 450 whp on the butt dyno with a simple tune to at least get the car running. Since the motor is still in its break-in stages, this car has been World One's long-term project for awhile now. Look for it in some print Valvoline ads...the engine bay was used for some advertising. Pics:

Part V: H to the Izzo, V to the Izzay

Along with myself, one of Garret's most dedicated customers was a goofy Korean kid named Jason Lee. Jason quickly became one of my best friends in the Subaru scene, and his close ties with Garret allowed him to become one of Garret's very first employees. It was during his first days of employment that he took up the "Hova" nickname, as well as "J-Lee" and "J-Lovin." Thus, over the years Jason has become a well-loved member of the Subaru community, and although he now owns a 350Z and primarily takes care of World One's Nissan efforts, he's still very much a Subaru owner at heart.

Jason's car had its own evolution. For a long time, his car was the lowest Subaru here in the Northwest, starting with Tanabe coilovers and Limix Linnea wheels. Undecided on wheels, he then went through a stint with some Advan RGs, and then eventually settled upon a set of gold Volk LE28Ns, just like Ivan (and despite Ivan's up-smacking of Jason's head every time he saw him). Along with the nice wheels was the holy grail of bugeye OEM bodykits: the full Australian EGR kit, along with a full audio setup on the interior. These efforts landed Jason with a feature article in Subiesport Magazine, dubbed "Sex on Wheels." He also took home 2nd Place Subaru at Tuner Bash After Dark here in Seattle in 2005. Pics:

Part VI: American Togue Monster

Carrying on the World One tradition of taking on young blood as employees, Joey Atterbury became World One's newest employee in 2005. During his stint at World One, Joey just happened to have an STi that would become the test bed for Element Tuning's upcoming GT65 turbo kit. This was definitely no show car: Joey's mind was on the track and on the track alone. While it took a few months to finally get the Element GT65 kit onto his car and running properly, Phil came to town and tuned the hell out of it, creating an absolute monster of a track car. Joey took me in a ride following Phil's tune and I can say with full confidence that I've never been in a smoother, and more powerful Subaru in my life. 100 comes up like it's nothing, and Phil's tune is so great that it doesn't even feel like it.

Always a stickler for the best parts available, supporting the Element Tuning GT65 kit was a Phil-tuned Hydra, TurboXS v2 FMIC, a set of Advan RGs at 17" for the track, and 18" Advan Model T6s for the street (after having gold LE28Ns as well). Holding the power was a Cusco Twin Disk Carbon/Carbon Clutch and the motor was fueled by Perrin 816cc injectors. Suspension-wise, he started off with JIC FLT-A2 coilovers with track springs, and then moved on to Cusco Zero2Rs, and finally to Tein Super Racing coilovers. The only body mods were a Cusco front lip and Beatrush brake ducts, along with painted stock WRX sideskirts. He also ran a full titanium Kakimoto GT1.0Z catback, which BY FAR is THE loudest exhaust available for any Impreza. Despite all these mods, Joey daily drove this car, and was quite happy breaking the car loose at 60 mph on the freeway.

The car's since been parted out, since Joey's left World One to go back to school and pursue his professional racing interests more seriously, but it still represents what could easily have been the fastest and most powerful Subaru in Washington State. He took the car down to California after entering Best Motoring's "American Togue 2," in which Orido himself praised the car's response and power. Look for it in the upcoming DVD! Pics:

Part VII: "Pretty in Pink"

Perhaps the most controversial of the World One Cars had to clearly be Stephanie French's STi. Gracing the cover of Subiesport Magazine and responsible for creating a phenomenon of a thread on NASIOC, when I told Stephanie, "I'll make you famous," I surely wasn't lying. Aside from the Subiesport feature, Stephanie's STi was featured on Car Domain and had a video feature on DrivingSports.com, not to mention all of the cross-posted threads on various other forums, ranging from Celicas, to SRT-4s, to even VWVortex. It was (and still is) a love and hate relationship between Stephanie's STi and the Subaru community: many love the fact that Stephanie wrenches on her own car and worked at World One, not to mention the pink wheels, but others hated her choice in mods, namely again, the pink wheels. Nevertheless, Stephanie's car stood out, just like all of the other World One Cars. Pics:

Part VIII: 9.73 @ 149.85 mph

In order to best serve the local Subaru community, World One needed the best tech in the area. Garret looked no further than import specialist, Wayde Segawa. Wayde's been working on imports longer than most of us have owned Subarus, with his roots in the Honda scene. Not only is he our head tech here, but he also builds motors and fabricates custom piping. He used this automotive expertise in his own personal drag-prepped CRX.

The B18C5 motor that Wayde built himself is pushing close to 600 whp, using a GT35R variant and custom fabricated headers, exhaust, roll cage, and chassis prep, all done by Wayde himself in house. With Wayde in the car, it roughly weighs in at 2200 lbs. Back in 2005, Wayde competed at Seattle's Battle of the Imports and took home a huge trophy, beating out all of the competition with a 9.73 @ 149.85, all done on his "low boost" setting of 24 psi. Look for some more awesome working coming from Wayde and our Subaru motor building division, Impact Designs. Pics:

Part IX: Legacy of Greatness

Whenever you walk into World One, you're greeted by a friendly face behind the counter that goes by the name of Vince. Like Wayde, Vince is a local import scene veteran. He's worked at a number of places before World One, including Garage SPL where Alex used to work. He also assists Wayde in any tech duties and takes care of the majority of our local customers.

Along with a Honda S2000, Vince has his daily driver, a Legacy GT wagon. He's slowly but surely building it up: currently it sports a rare set of 19" Volk Progressive TEs, with STi Brembos under them, along with being dropped on a set of Tein Flex coilovers, Cobb uppipe and downpipe, along with a TDC Protuned AccessPort. Keep your eyes out for this car, as we've all got some big plans for it to come. Pics:

Part X: Rally Monster

Getting back to Subaru's rally roots, World One looks no where other than our own Jonathan. Jonathan's the voice you normally hear other than Garret whenever you call in, and has been an integral part of World One for over a year now. He's our resident Prodrive nut and rally freak, taking his car to local rallies whenever and whereever he can. At his first rallycross near Olympia, WA, he placed 1st in his class and 5th place overall. He also has another rally car that he competes in, and place very well in it this past weekend at the Mt. Hood Rally.

As you can see, Jonathan's car is all rally'd out. The Prodrive PWRC1s in 18s are the first things that stand out, complete with dirt as any rally car should be. He's dropped on 04 STi springs and struts, with Borla headers and a custom intake and catback giving him power. And, to get those slow rally cars out of the way, a set of Hella Supertones hides behind his Liberal-style grill up front. Pics:

Part XI: Bugeye for Life

I don't like to talk about myself, or my car for that matter. The idea of coming anywhere near sounding boastful or conceited really bothers me, because it's one of the things that I dislike about people in general. That said, I'm not going to try to talk up my car at all, but just let the facts and pictures speak for themselves.

I took delivery of my 2002 bugeye when I got off the bus and walked to my house in March 2001. It was sitting there waiting for me...turned out to be an early college graduation gift from my parents, since I was on my way to graduate from the University of Washington in June that year. It turned out to have a 4EAT tranny, and I've been poked and jabbed about that ever since But, what I always tell people is that when you have a new car as a present waiting in your driveway for you, you don't complain about anything.

In any case, the full story and history of my car can be found in the April 2006 issue of Subiesport Magazine, entitled "Bugeye in Blue." It's way too long to post here. What I do have here though is what I've done since then. After the rebirth, the interior was completely redone by Car Nutz Custom Upholstery, matching the rear seats and door cards with the front Recaro fabric, and re-covering the headliner in a very nice grey suede. Audio Integrations also came through to help re-do my stereo system, putting in an Alpine IVA-W200 and a whole bunch of Diamond Audio goodies. Finally, the WRB Hella Supertones were added to finally finish off the front grill area.

Now that I'm officially a World One employee, I've got a bunch of new things in mind, but for now they stay top secret. Here's 5 of many pictures:

Part XII: Red Domination

As one of the local Subaru veterans, Erik Allas has been a long time and well-loved member of the Northwest Subaru community. He was one of the first people I ever met in the local scene here, and continues to be a very close friend and fellow photographer (and that's not just because we're both GB&D). His 2001 2.5RS has gone through many iterations, from being purely a street car, to being a best in class car show winner, to now being an extremely fast and capable daily driver. I still remember when I first photochopped on some bronze Volk CE28Ns onto his car and told him that THOSE were the wheels he needed; and wouldn't you know it, he went and got them.

I really can't think of anyone more experienced in different Subaru performance ideas than Erik. The only thing he hasn't tried is supercharging...he first started off running nitrous, then threw on a Ludespeed Stage 3 turbo kit (that coincidentally, uses a T3/T4 turbo) and tuned the car himself with the Link Plus standalone, and then finally went with a EJ205 swap with a full TurboXS Stage 4+ kit, much in thanks to both World One and Pacific Import Auto in Tacoma, WA. On top of winning Best Subaru at a number of local car shows and having a lengthy Subiesport Magazine feature on his car and motor swap, Erik ran his fastest 13.1 with a bogging 2.2 60-foot at this year's Battle of the Imports, besting his previous 13.2 with a 1.8 60-foot with his old turbo kit. 12s were pretty much a given with a better launch, but unfortunately the car was retired thanks to a broken alternator belt. Next year though, we all shall see. Pics:

Part XIII: The World Rally Blue Menace

The first time I met Donn Dupaya was at a World One dyno day 2 years ago. He had just moved up here from California with his 04 WRX and we talked for a long time about what he wanted to do with his car. I introduced him to Garret and things really took off from there. Now a member of Seattle's elite car show club, Team Menace, we see each other at every car show and give each other fun and friendly competition for the coveted 1st Place Subaru trophy.

Currently, Donn's car sports a full Do-Luck body kit, complete with the Do-Luck lowpost spoiler. He's even rolling on Do-Luck's Subaru-specific, 17-inch racing wheels, which go over STi Brembos and Project Mu rotors. He also has the one and only Do-Luck carbon fiber hood and hood scoop in the country. A full Stage 4+ lies under the hood, complete with all the suspension and interior goodies to make him one of the cars to beat in the local Subaru car show scene. He's got even bigger plans for his car now, just wait and see. Pics:

Part XIV: Accept No Substitutes

This customer car has been an ongoing project of ours for a number of months, and has finally come to fruition. It is a purpose-built race car, with everything chosen for functionality rather than simple aesthetics. At first glance, the Ings +1 body kit, SYMS wide front fenders, and Rotora Dry Carbon spoiler plant the car on the ground lap after lap. Sticking the car to the ground are meaty Pirelli 10-inch wide slicks, wrapped around extremely light weight SSR Comps and a StopTech big brake kit. Under the hood is a plethora of power mods, consisting of a World One-spec Stage 2 shortblock, forged pistons, FP Green turbo, APS DR725 FMIC, Fujitsubo equal length header with a World One-spec external wastegate/downpipe combo, and a JIC full titanium catback, all working together in harmony thanks to a Hydra EMS standalone. In addition, a full carbon fiber driveshaft helps transmit the power to the rear wheels.

Cusco Zero2Rs along with Hotchkis sway bars provided the footing, while a Seibon carbon fiber hood, trunk lid, and front and rear doors help keep the weight down. These doors are crazy light compared to the stock ones. On the interior is a full JDM v9 Spec C RA interior, with Sparco buckets, a full Autopower roll cage, and Defi gauges. We're excited to see what kind of numbers this car tears through at the track!

Part XV: Bailey Boi Wonder

Bailey is a regular at World One. We tend to see him at least once or twice a week, and he comes in to hang out, help us weed some vinyl, press some T-Shirts, and discuss his latest plans for his 2006 STi. As you can see from the pictures below, the car is already coming along rather nicely. Under the hood lies an Element Tuning GT52 turbo, supported by Element Tuning's Hydra EMS, Turbosmart E-Boost, APS FMIC, APS cold air intake, APS turboback, PE 850cc injectors, and of course a Walbro pump. Suspension-wise, Cusco Zero2Es with the Cusco E-Con give him crisp handling, and the Prodrive GC-010Gs in 18x9.5, wrapped with sticky Bridgestone RE-01 rubber, give him that street and performance bling. Underneath those Prodrive curves is a Project Mu 345mm big brake kit. To go along with the Defi gauges on the interior, Bailey's got a full Zerosports body kit and an APR GTC-300 wing. His car was featured in Modified Mag and we're proud to have his car on our wall.

Part XVI: The DJ Wagon

Dave Marcus has been a long time customer of World One. Hailing from the Colorado area, Dave has become a great customer, friend, and confidant of Garret and myself in particular. He's been with us for a long time, and showing him this thread has brought back a lot of memories.

You see, his car, much like many of the cars on this thread, has undergone quite a transformation. Powered by a Super 16G, it started as a badass blue bugeye wagon, with some UK300 headlights and Rota Tarmacs, and then with timeless Volk TE37s, but an unfortunate incident left him without these wheels and looking for something new. During this time, he decided to switch things up a bit and throw on a complete "blogeye" sedan front end, and he switched over to some custom powdercoated Advan RG-IIs that he sourced from World One. To this day, it still remains his daily driver, and one of the best performing and reliable Stage 4 WRXs at altitude. Kudos to Dave for sharing these pictures and your long AIM conversations with us

Part XVII: Keanie in a Bottle

The introduction of Saab's 92x added a sense of refinement and higher class to the Subaru community. Basically a WRX wagon with a Saab shell, this car was spawned from Subaru's now-estranged partnership with GM. Picking up on this arrangement was World One customer Keane, who goes by the screen name, "keaniegenie." While the aggressive stance and Prodrive GC-05Fs stand out right away, under the hood is a monster in hiding.

Keane's 92x is powered by a swapped in STI longblock with AVCS, Element Tuning GT52 turbo with Turbosmart 38mm wastegate, Element Tuning Hydra, Element Tuning Hydramist, TurboXS top-mount intercooler, Invidia downpipe, Greddy Evo2 catback, APS equal-length header, and all the supporting goodies. Keeping this sleeper on the ground are a set of front StopTech big brakes, StopTech rear H6 brake upgrade, Tein Flex coilovers with EDFC, Cusco strut braces, Perrin rear sway bar with endlinks, and Prodrive GC-05Fs wrapped in Kumho SPT rubber. We're excited to see what Keane has in store next, and we're happy to know that he'll be surprising the hell out of people out there with his sleeper

Part XVIII: Attack of the Elements

The heart of every Impreza is a heart of a warrior. After all, why have all the show without the go? Nothing could be further from the truth than the Element Tuning Time Attack car. Phil's car started competing on the East Coast, then came over for SEMA last year, competed in California, then was driven up from the LA area in time for Subiefest in late November 2006. Despite an unfortunate accident on the track, Phil's car held the best time of the day, but it wasn't until the Subiefest 2 where Phil's car officially took home the Subiefest Time Attack crown.

From the outside you can instantly see weight savings...the Seibon Carbon Fiber doors shaved at least 250 pounds from the chassis. The rest of the black is comprised of a Seibon CWII-style hood, Seibon trunk lid, Seibon side skirts, Chargespeed rear over fenders, APR GTC-300 rear spoiler, and APR front wind splitter. The Zerosports front bumper opens up to a TurboXS FMIC, helping cool down the 450+ whp Element Tuning GT65 turbo kit, and is finished on the rear end by a SYMS rear bumper. Keeping the car on the ground are JIC FLT-A2 coilvers with Element-spec spring rates, Prodrive GC-05Fs in 18x9.5 for wet, Prodrive GC-010G in 18x9.5 for dry, and a StopTech 355x32mm front brake kit to replace the stock Brembos.

Sadly for us, Phil took the car back to the East Coast, but hopefully it'll be back again to compete in West Coast time attacks in the future

Part XIX: Dracula's Wagon

Long-time friend and show car fanatic, Johann Ave represents the continuing success of World One cars in the local car show scene. This GT30R and Element Tuning Hydra EMS-powered "Bad Wagon" features Johann's own "Vampire Napkin" paint on a Chargespeed front bumper and WRX sedan fenders front and rear. Johann does all his installs and bodywork himself, which is a testament to how special his car is. On the rear, Johann's car sports one of the only Seibon carbon fiber wagon hatches in the country, with a matching Seibon CW-II style hood up front. Taking home the gold this past car show season time and time again, we can only expect more success from Johann in the coming year. Not too shabby for a daily driver

Part XX: Teh Fastarrrrrrrrrr

Say what you want about SRT-4s...but the majority of the people who would scoff at one simply can't match the amount of power that Ashneet Deo's SRT-4 puts out. Recently dyno'd at 423 whp at 23 psi on an ATP GT3071R turbo kit, this car is fast enough to give Bailey's GT52-powered STI a run for its money on the highway. The car made so much power that we even had to upgrade the axles to DSS Stage 3 axles after breaking the stock one. Instead of going with some gaudy set of chrome wheels that many other domestics are notorious for, Ashneet picked up a nice set of Advan RG-IIs and a StopTech 4-piston BBK to help him roll and stop in style. Tein SS-Ps also help keep him on the road, along with a Quaife LSD and Clutchmasters Stage 4 clutch to hold the power. While I try my best to post more than just 3 photos, you'll have to check out the full 6 1/2 page spread on Ashneet's car in the November 2007 issue of Modified Mag for more

That's it for now...we'll have more soon!
