Given that I've well and truly got the track-day bug.. I wanted to find a car that I could use more regularly. A set of tyres for either the Skyline or Exige is the thin end of £800, not to mention brakes.. servicing costs, and heaven forbid should I crash.. it'd cost me big-££££ in repairs.

So I figured that in addition to the Skyline and Exige, I'd get a rough and ready car that I could hoon around in, learn how to drive with the knowledge that if I crashed, it wouldn't cost me a lot of money.

So I got this:

It's a '79 Escort RS2000, TurboTechnics with it comes uprated Capri brakes, roll cage, bilstein shocks, 5spd gearbox etc. knocking out an acceptable 150bhp.

OK, so it's not going to be mega fast in a straight line, but it's all about fun, and you can have that no matter how fast you're going.

Total cost £1800, which isn't even the Excess on the track day insurance for the Skyline.

As I've got a trailer, reliability and comfort aren't such an issue either. Spares are insanely cheap.. a gearbox is £25, an engine block is £60, crikey, even a set of wheels with tyres is less than £100-all-in.

(Apologies for poor picture quality, it was chucking it down this morning and wanted a quick snap)

DavidBrown,

What do you mean not fast in a straight line, would be after a Cossie engine Ask Dingy....

I have an RS2000 (can't say as my third car, as it's been in bits for the last 9 years) Fair play mate, it'll handle better than the Scooby

Cheers Phill

PS Only £1800, looks nice as well.... You need to five link it now

It's a brilliant idea, I'm going to be doing this later on in the year for exactly the same cost reasons. I reckon you'll have even more fun 'cos you won't be holding back out of worry

Steve.

Excellent. I can see a lot more people finding cheap track cars - I'm still toying with the idea of a caged up 205 GTI...

Dave - looks good mate

I will be toying with this idea later on when I have made my fortune - will go the caged 205 route.

DW,

We have GREAT fun on our (reasonably) cheap Pug 205. It started off cheap, but now its getting expensive as we're on the quest for power.

For a track day car its a lark to say the least. I wouldn't expect to keep up with a scoob, or similar but you can certainly have a blast throwing it around. It handles VERY well, traction is a nightmare especially in the wet despite a QUAIFE diff.

Hoping for a good competitive year. Didn't do too badly in a reasonably standard Pug.

Apparently it was on its way down by the time the photo was taken. It bounced off the kerb on the left of the photo.

I like the dab of opposite lock as he thought it was going off !

Needless to say he didn't lift off the gas

What is it with these rear drive 'Scort owners ?????
Nutters I tell you !!!

Rich, no I didn't take it on Sunday.. I'm having it checked out, serviced etc. first.

I took the Skyline with the usual "woah" tail out moments.
