Red Arrows - RIAT 2005, RAF Fairford
Hi peeps - just a few photos from Fairford today, of the awesome Red Arrows (the first one is my photocomp entry, hence the poncey border):
...oh, and a Chinook that was looking rather cool:
Anybody else go, any other pics???
Enjoy!

Thanks guys... I like 'em!
They were all shot yesterday (Sunday) with a Canon EOS 1Ds (not a cheap camera!), with EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS lens (again, not cheap) with a 1.4x teleconvertor. Circular polariser on the end for most shots IIRC. The fast jets were shot in 'shutter priority' mode with shutter speeds of around 1/750s to 1/1000s, the helicopter was shot much slower to give some element of movement in the blades - probably 1/125s or something like that.
Having the kit is half the battle - then having an 'eye' for a decent image is the only other part required really, along with a modicum of intelligence and knowledge as to how to operate an SLR and what the different shutter combinations / apertures affect.
After that it's a numbers game - I probably shot at least 500 shots yesterday... these are some of the 'keepers'... there's a much higher number of rubbish!

I was in a field on the opposite side of the runway (to the crowd), right by the fence and one of the crash-gates - so the display was right above my head, which helps!
The synchro-pair were crossing directly above me... scarey stuff, but absolutely awesome. The Italians were pretty good as well... and the flypass that the Arrows did with the 3 spitfires in formation was very cool.
Disappointed not to see any stealth fighters or bombers flying this year. Oh well, can't have it all! We did get the first appearance of a UAV though - great... looked like someone's radio-controlled plane.

Some of the shots were taken with a polariser, which helps... though all have been 'tweaked' to get the colours properly saturated and the brightness/contrast right.
Getting the best from an SLR also means being a whizz in the darkroom... getting the best from a digital SLR also means having a vague idea of what to do with Raw conversion software and Photoshop!

Who? Italians?
They were pretty good TBH.The one in spotlight did some great things.Really skillful pilot.Bobbing the aircraft up n down like hell! Just reminded me of my friend who had here first date with her would-be husband pilot in an air show.He put her in an aerobatic aircraft as his present to her.She was so sick in the plane!
They still got married

This was taken at 560mm, and then needed to be cropped to get anything of reasonable size. The joys of 11mp... but still not exactly the best quality (but better than you could see with the naked eye!)

At least I can see this lawn mower in this picture!
I was far from big screen where they did project the close-up image and as you know, there was no chance of seeing this orange sparrow well enough even with the binoculors. Thanks mate.Good shot tho
