Default new intake...

just finished a new intake for my 03.

used a 100mm flexi aluminium pipe, pulled out the resonator box & snorkel, and cut a cone to shape to go in to the airbox. Finished off with a bit of mesh on the entry end. Basically most of the benefits of a CAI whilst retaining the standard airbox

The foglight was cracked anyway so no great loss there (and they're crap anyway!)

what do you guys think?

None taken mate...it did occur to me whether to get a set of fog covers (so the other side doesnt look as unbalanced) but we will see....im just looking to see if it will make a small performance difference.

Now the ECU has learned after a few trips it really does feel very strong when up to a decent speed.

One thing i was surprised at was the lack of noise increase without the resonator box though.....

Are you running NOS? Just noticed the sticker on your air box.

I'm thinking of doing this to lower intake temp, have your air temps dropped at all??

this answer your question?

i have only just installed it.....primarily for cooling but there is a set of 45 jets in there. The bottle is being filled as we speak and i will be trying it on the rollers on sunday.

Ive rigged a purge kit to the intercooler spray nozzle so all being well a quick flick of the switch and the intercooler gets frozen....nice cool air that way too

our good friends at either homebase or b&q will sort you out mate...

i also used a reducing cone on the airbox end to snuggly fit in to the vacated hole perfectly. You can also get those from B&Q.

a tenner for the lot

Did this at the weekend and went for a couple of test runs

When i had the standard intake, on high speed cruising the intake temperature never went below 2 degrees above the outside ambient temperature, normally the intake temp sat between 2-4 degrees above ambient. When accelerating hard from slower speeds the intake temp would drop as the speed increased, during a blast around the lanes the intake temp would very rarely go below 3 degrees above ambient, and regularly sit higher.

With the intake set up as neilo has (and no fog light cover on), cruising at 80 sees an intake temp 1-2 degrees above ambient, but when accelarating hard and blasting about the intake temp dropped to the ambient temp within seconds. Basically as soon as the turbo starts working (sucking the air in) the temp drops almost instantly. For example, exiting a roundabout in 2nd with the intake at 2 degrees above ambient, plant your foot, then by the time you change into 3rd the intake temp was down to ambient temp!

I then tried the same test with the fog light cover on, it did supply colder air than standard more of the time, but i could never get it below 2 degrees above ambient, plus it didn't supply cooler air as quick as with the fog light cover removed.

I like the look of the car with the covers on, so i'm going to either drill holes in the cover (like the G-Force car in this months Jap performance mag) or cut a large shape out of the cover and fit mesh behind it. I'm also toying with the idea of making a fog lamp cover with an intake in it for the pipe to slip straight onto, similiar to the Zero sports item.

The ali hose is 100mm diameter x 1m long, i think it costs £7.95, and the the cone to fit the pipe to the air box is a 100-65mm reducer, its white and comes with 2 jubilee clips to attack the hose, i think that cost £3.

Excellent I'll have a look for that then. Is the hose for an extractor or something?

Yes, its with all the heater/boiler/cooker extraction stuff.

I actually cut my cone down slightly so it had a wider hole inside the airbox, plus it made it easier to fit as you could attach the hose to the cone before inserting it into the inner wing.

******WARNING*******

I have driven to work today in the pi$$ing down rain and the car started to splutter, then i had the check enginge light come on. I have just read the error fault code and it says "miss fire in cyclinder 1". I looked at the intake pipe and it has a small puddle of water just inside the front edge, so I checked inside the air box and there is no a small amount of water in there, and on the engine side of the filter there are traces of water. Basically the spray from the road/rain has gone straight into the airbox as it is so open and there is no water trap (due to the resonator box being removed). If i put the fog lamp cover back on this shouldn't happen again, but its going to be a slow journey home tonight!!!

Good point that. I might have a rethink before I start
