Default DIY Mudflaps (Classic UK Turbo) a work in progress

Very much a work in progress at the moment, but I have decided to make my own Mudflaps

Currently I have factory mudflap but want to change the look..

I bought the material from MPC Ltd.... £27.50 enough for 2 pairs (Not kaylan but I'm doing this on a budget)

http://www.m-p-c.demon.co.uk/mpcmudflaps.html

Came rolled up, so I'm waiting for them to straighten out 100% (Not too bad at the moment).

Spent the best part of 2 hours marking up and cutting out. I've seen a few templates floating about (austen wrx - kindly gave me one) and I found another one aswell, which I have based these on.

Going to go to Halfrauds tonight to buy some clips/bolts as my last ones are corroded

Just waiting for a bit of time and dry weather to mark up the fixing holes and to make the brackets (should be fun as I live in a 2 bed flat with no garage and no vice/clamp)

Will most more pics as things progress..

Hello mate

A limit to the amount of money in my pockets!

Do all Classics come with mud flaps? I want to replace the aftermarket ones on my (newly acquired) Impreza with the original mud flaps - when I spoke to the dealer they said that the Classic Impreza didn't have mud flaps by default and that I should take a look at the accessories catalogue to choose which ones I wanted. I'm sure my last classic Impreza had mud flaps from new.

They are an optional extra. There have been group buys on Kaylan material and brackets all for about £70. Austen wrx has just done a 2005 GB.

Bit of a nightmare last night spent the best part of a couple of hours stuck in traffic visiting various dealers (subaru & Lotus) Halfords, B&Q.

The long and short of it is that Subaru sell them in there Mudflap kit but will not separate.

Lotus sell the correct clip but this is 80p x 16 = £12.80 (On just clips LOL)

Halfords sell a speaker clip (which is very similar) that uses a self tapping screw! But I want something more secure than this.

There is a motorist spares place up the road from me that I am going to try next.

The problem is that there is less access on the Classic than on newer Impreza's, so a captive panel nut (as pictured) is needed as I can't get my hand & a spanner in where I need to get it!!!

I'll keep you posted with developments.

You want the plastic clips with the nut insert, better for the paint.

On my travels I haven't found anything that would replicate what I want. I think I know what you mean, but have you got a specific clip (shop to get it from).

Should measure the holes to make sure I get a good fit (if I'm to go for a push clip instead of a Nut and bolt fixing.

I'll see what this motorist shop throws up.

Halfords do a pair of flaps in Blue, White, or Red for 14.99, but I had to screw mine on with self tappers! Not fallen off yet though! Its hard finding stickers that stick to them though

They look good mate.

Self tappers! do these use a similar clip as above? or are you screwing into the plastic underlining?

I may see if I can move some more of the plastic underlining to get my hand in to hold a bolt in place first!!

thanks

BSc Product Design, Bournemouth.

Depends what aspect you work in, my placement year was at a design consultancy in Hamersmith, did a wide range of work there including modelling and testing (lowish wages though).

Now automotive, no physical modelling (apart from the 37.5 hrs a week behind a CAD station), but the money is much better. Still got a lot of debt to pay off though.

One of the reasons I'm making my own Mudflaps, LOL.

38 hours of CAD a week copying other peoples design in architectural hardware not designing at all and still on graduate pay after 2 years of working

I made my own flaps at work using the A0 plotter and bought the material from the same place. they charge £10 for two but £15 online

Keep at it mate, with a couple of years under the belt, you should be able to make a move and get better pay else where. Good luck.

Asked a favour (+ a nice bottle of wine) from a mate that owns a fabrication shop. Arranged yesterday for the use of a corner of his workshop.

So armed with templates I made yesterday and his workshop, I should be able to get a good job done.
