Have owned it about a month now, just got round to posting these pictures....

There's been a few mods since I've had it, Magnex Exhuast, White Side Repeaters, Clear Front Indicators, Subaru 4-Pots...

Hope This Worked!
Matt.

Colour Coded Sills, Wing Mirrors & Handles is next on the list of things to do, alongside a front lip spoiler and some STI red/white rear lights... I think that'll finish it off nicely!

cinders,

i remember when my Scoob looked like yours (barring colour coded mirrors, handles, 17s and mudlaps). if you want an idea of what it'll look like with the aforementioned mods, just post back and i send ya pic (or 2)

K

ps. don't forget jewel indicators front & side

K9VYN - Definately send me them! I'd love to see...

As for a bigger spoiler.... nah.... I like the look of the back with the current spoiler - thats staying the same.

Think I'm going to keep the alloys - I think they look smart as hell and they're totally mint (ie. not scuffed)

Plus 16" is a better size for acceleration over 17's...

cinders,

admittedly, i was only saying last night that i've seen some really clean cars (like yours) with low level spoilers that just have a little something special about them.

see here for the pics - please ignore the odd g/f and sister pics... not very organised am i

Kev - I'm just going for a few subtle mods on mine, keeping all the old bits so I can return it to standard when I sell it.

I don't want it to stick out too much, I'd rather have 300bhp under the bonnet and it not look to flash than a beefed up one covered in stickers and spoilers etc.

Nice car by the way!

Yup, remember when mine was like that too! Check it out, looks a good clean example though! Enjoy it.

THAT IS A LOVELY CAR

I have an MY02 that has been totally tarted up looks-wise, but once in a while I see a classic, unblemished example like this and suddenly remember why I always wanted a scooby!!

Don't spoil it with any OTT mods my friend

Question

Plus 16" is a better size for acceleration over 17's...
please explain.
If you go from 16" to 17" then you would change tyre profile to keep the rolling radius approximately the same. In fact because there is less flex in the sidewall of a lower profile tyre then I would expect acceleration to improve. But by such a small amount that not measurable in the real world.

The only thing I'm thinking of doing is leaving the door handles black as it seems a lot of trouble to colour code these, plus I won't be able to drive my car about without them!...

Do you think leaving them black would look alright?.....

Oh crumbs, this is a hole can of worms I've opened here, I always thought that the major thing that affects acceleration is the radial inertia. The best way to describe this is to say that going from a 15" wheel to a 16" wheel means that the heaviest part of the wheel, the rim is further away from the centre of the wheel, so it's harder for the engine to turn...

As for the theory...

law (can't remember who exactly) states that:
Torque (T)(Nm.) is the result of a force(in Newton's) practiced out within a radial(in meters) motion.
thus T = Fr x R

consider the wheels as a further loss in radial force. Increasing the wheel size decreases the radial force and thus resulting a greater loss from the wheels.

Cinders, my mate has just bought a 98 scoob exactly the same as yours!!!!

your car looks good Kev, i remember seeing it at the TSL open day last year. it's your fault i spent a wedge buying an sti 5 spoiler

I suppose I should get it all done!... Right I'm going to have to find a good body shop in Middlesbrough that will do the job right!...

But first - I'm going to buy some STI Red/White lenses...

Question

But IIRC the tyre can weigh as much as, if not more than the wheel, most of this being in the tread, which means that the change of wheel has only a small overall effect. Even less if you increase the width as well as the diameter. Besides which you are calculating the rotational acceleration of the wheel, which is not necessarily converted to forward acceleration of the vehicle, due to sidewall and tread flex, wheelspin.

Reducing the unsprung weight will improve handling so the negligible accelerative effect will be more than balanced.

You're dead right about keeping the rear spoiler. I'd leave the sills black too. Colour coding doesn't really work IMO on lighter coloured cars - makes them look fatter.

I ordered my first Impreza back in '97 based on a photo of a MY98 identical to yours. I had forgotten how good a standard solid red car can look. Keep it clean and straight and enjoy having a rare thing - a tasteful Scooby!!

16" or 17" better for acceleration ?

Good question. It depends on several things. I guess you would need to know the rotational inertia of each wheel/tyre combination. Also the rolling diameter is important as it may change the overall gearing. Different tyres have different rolling resistances too, but not sure how noticable that would be in terms of acceleration only, more of a factor in economy.

I guess what I'm saying is there's no straight answer
