As some of you know I have embarked on Project Daihatsu A small 659cc 4wd Turbo crazy car. The initial plan is for 115 bhp but this may increase to 135 bhp. Not a lot but it only weighs 650 kg with a max speed of 100mph so 0-60's should be fairly brisk. New exhaust is on comments more than welcome.....
Old Exhaust
New Exhaust
HKS Suction and SSQV
Worlds smallest IC ?

Only passed the MOT last week and the old small one failed so the dealer put that "thing" on to get it through. Will change again though.
The exhaust exits from that side as standard. I have the L512s MY98 chassis which is the 4wd version. They have made so many versions over the years he may have a different MY.

Yes his is the 4wd as well with the little button at the back of the gearbox to select between 2 and 4 wheel drive.
The exhaust may come out the same its been a while since I saw it.
Good cars though very reliable. We have done 10 or more events with it and the spanners are still clean.
Vauxhall nova suspension on these as far as I can remember.
It will be interesting to see how reliable these are with the extra power.
Cheers
Craig

can you throw a few more pics in and give us some expected performance figures for the 115 and 135 bhp outputs.
This is pretty interesting as it would be a fairly cheap project.

Hi Gedi,
Firstly standard BHP is 64 at 0.8bar and the 0-60 is 8.4 and that is @ 8,000 rpm in 3rd !!! The initial plan as said is 115bhp. To get to this you need :
Air Filter
Dump Valve (Debate on if standard will cope in the Daihatsu Community with high boost)
Exhaust
Cat Bypass
Organic clutch
Pal Sports ECU running 1.3 bar
210cc injectors to go with above (up from 165cc)
I am also fitting -45mm Pal Sports lowering springs
Alloys (Almost impossible to replace due to size, offet and PCD) I am having a set hand made for me
To get upto 135 BHP you need a bigger IHI turbo model IHIRH3 and a larger IC
The 1st stage mods I'm doing come in at £3000 (excluding alloys)which include shipping from Japan, fitting (clutch is an engine out job)import and VAT at 22% The ECU was on an exchange basis so the price is higher as I did not wish to loose my original. The new ECU has 2 channels, the original 0.8 bar and the revised 1.3 bar with appropiate timing fueling etc which is pretty cool as come service time, no hooligans can go mad in it plus Mrs T does not want the power.
To buy one of these in the UK is not easy as they are very very rare and a few have been killed but I have seen them at the £3.5-4k mark for a 98 model.
I have already received mail from Daihatsu who want to borrow the car when its complete for shows and what not. Maybe maybe not depending on what I can get out of them
If anyone wants links or info about these cars I have spent 5 years researching what can and what cannot be done.
I have seen a 659cc model running in excess of 200 BHP
The benchmark for the engines seem to be 140 bhp before bits start failing and 200 bhp for the drivetrain, so I'm keeping well within these limits.
At 115 bhp this will be about 175 bhp/tonne plus the gearing is very short giving good acceleration. My old RB5WR had about 185/tonne if memory serves me correctly, so I'm hoping it will scare some but not all

Nope, mine is a 4 pot 16 valve. In japan they have a "Kei" class of car that is exempt from a number of taxes and the requirement for a parking spot. Kei class cars must conform to max engine size, bhp limits and body dimensions. For a blown engine the limit is 64bhp and 659cc. These are agreed limits but most of the engines are over engineered allowing easy power upgrades once sold. Daihatsu do a variety of different models as do Suzuki, Honda etc....Subaru do a supercharged 659cc model

Hi Scooby-Doo.....I'd love to try some of those mods on my car...an ex challenge spec rally car.
Tonka/Craig is wrong, my exhaust exits on the same side as yours.
I'd really love some more power out of my car, it's the one thing it's lacking in the forests.Exhaust would have to pass noise test though....so not very loud required.
Any info of parts suplliers etc would be most gratefull.
P.S......my cars for sale if you know anyone who's interested.
Jon.

Hi Chez, Dremel
Places for parts are :
Pal Sports Daihatsu Page
K Take Off
Suzuki Register
To answer some questions :
Palsports do two exhausts the one I have that has a small silencer at the end and a second with a middle box as well (where it is now). Mine is loud and you'd never think a 659cc was coming down the road
Mine is 105db where as the twin silencer is only 88db. Power is very slightly up but it will be more important once the boost is raised to 1.3 bar. Pal sports do everything you could ever want and if the quality of the Spings and exhaust is anything to go by the rest should be top notch when it arrives. I have been in discussions with them for 4 months now as they have never sold outside of Japan before. They do not speak english so thank God for Bablefish !!! Once the cat is removed and boost is raised bit worried now about noise and possible flames on overrun so I might have a center box added by a local exhaust manufacturer.
Palsports and K Takeoff both sell parts for Daihatsu's and Suzukis's. K Takeoff do some crazy body kits for both models.
Have you any pictures of your works model and at what price where abouts in the UK are you ? I'm in Surrey.
D sports is another Jap company that do parts.
