To complement the STi8 and 172 Clio......Couldnt resist this (my throw away car) for track days and the odd nurburgring trip, if it will make it.

Spec of the car is three owners from new 2 of them ladies, 100K, every receipt, every MOT, FSH most from supplying dealer, Guttman LTD eddition 5 only from dealer in uk..... Standard 1.9 GTi in sorrento green, plus full leather, Guttman alloys, Guttan rear lights, Guttman spoilers, Guttman grill, Guttman sports exhaust, Guttman (koni adjustable suspension) twin headlights, etc etc etc.

£17,500 13 years ago .....ooouch

Engine has superchip, kent fast road cam and induction kit.

Well thats it till I get used to wot is right and wot is wrong with the car and then I will start getting her ready for the track and nurburgring ..... Fancy a trip Davey??????

Wink

worth fitting a decent cage if you plan on using this on track as the pug isnt that solid in a big shunt. Bet you spin it off backwards.

I agree with you there John. Seats are first things to come out then the cage goes in. Trying to do it all on a tight budget though, really dont want it to become an asset im worried about else the fun will go out of it I think. Thats the reason i'm not doing it in the scoob. The more money you throw around the track the more you worry ''what the hell happens if I stack it'' etc etc.

She is a real good runner though and the engine feels real strong.

I know a dutch guy with a 1.9 GTI with a 16v engine installed now.
He has also fitted a cage inside, just to be sure when it's going tough. But surprisingly it eliminates almost all of the understeer... (and you get a lot of that when driving on the Ring...)

Creepy, I also have a 205 with Mi16 engine. Engine is a bit shot at the mo, so saving up for a new engine with twin 45's. 900kg, 198bhp

Also to be used on track once I have it all running properly.

John F, any recommendations on roll cages??

PS Gary, if you are fitting the cage yourself visit Matt's pages at:

Cage 1

Cage 2

PS this is what happens when you roll a 205 - luckily Matt had a cage in his, and you can see how it saved his life:

Wow, hope he was OK.

I presume he went light over the brow, skidded on the smooth tarmac and rolled into the field?

I did a similar thing a long time ago on a road rally in a new Opel Manta 2.0 GTE, except I rolled it several times into the field, as we went off at a bend that was "Not as map".
Thank God the car had a factory metal sunroof, that they fit a strengthening hoop by the B pillar for. The roof bent down from there to the top of the dash.
We were both OK thanks to the roll hoop, except my navigator blacked out.
I would never do any competetive driving without a cage now, even trackdays. My race Jag had a full Safety Devices cage, bag tank, extinguishers, etc. You can't spend too much on safety.

But you've got to have fun as well, just take precautions.

"Not as map" - quality statement

Glad you were OK though, my uncle was a rally driver back in the 80's, just local forest/road stuff.

He once rolled his Chevette through a wall, down a hill and ended up on his roof in a river - car was shafted!!

Them were the days.

So back on topic, what is the best cage for Gary and I to buy, any opinions? (Sorry for the partial hijack Gary)

ideally you want a full weld in cage similar to what Jamie has in her rally wagon. http://www.subiegal.com/SGRacing/wrx...reparation.htm

That can be very expensive though, so the majority of people go for something along the lines of a safety devices bolt in cage. You can get these in variuos specs from basic clubman to more substantial, they also make weld in cages you can have a local fabricator install for you.

Basically, do the best you can with the funds you have. If you use a cage, make sure you have strong fixed seats and at least 4 point, ideally 5/6 point harnesses, as installing a cage in a car with 3 pint belts is asking for you to smack your head in a crash, which could kill you.

Small tip.
Cover the cage in pipe lagging near to anywhere you might bang into it. It may not be very good if there was a fire though, so look into the purpose-made cage padding to see if it is better for fire resistance.

I think a bolt-in one will be fine for me, as I will only do a couple of trackdays a year in it.

Budget is a problem, as I need a new engine first

Order is back and passenger seat out, carpets out ......cage in ..... drivers seat out ...... bucket seat and harness in ..... then I can start playing and think about other stuff....

All those answers and not one comment about the car itself ...hahaha ..... must look like a pile of poooo ......well I love ya pug if no-one else does

Sorry Gary

Car looks cool

Still like those original proper twin headlight conversions.

PS, if you want, price up having 2 cages done at your place, a sort of "mini-group buy" if you will.

The Safety Devices cages are £500+ each and dont even fit in that well.

@ Dreamweaver : Looks like GODZILLA has run over the car, he defenitly crashed his toenails on the cage

@ TVR Gary :Remember that, when you make a cage of your own, you have to weld it very good, because, when you have an accident and the tubes split, they could spice you like a meatstick...

ooops
Nice car Gary, used to have a 1.9 GTi. It was so nice that a mate still owns it after 12 years! His son (an excellent racing driver) has 3 other 1.9 GTi's. His wife won't have anything else, even though they have a garage full of XJ220's !!! He is the UK service agent for the 220, amongst other things.
Fantastic fun, scared myself silly in it a couple of times!
Yours looks great. You should have a lot of fun in it.

Steve
