Hi

I thought some of you might like to see these pics, I've had our new APS Top Mounted Intercooler on for 2 months now and have been very impressed indeed, but my Australian colleagues sent me some details on the new front mount which has been specifically designed for the new Subaru WRX and STI.

It requires no cutting and offers the largest FMIC available for the new car! Also a lot of you will be happy to know that we now use mandrel bent steel pipes with a red STI stylee crackle finish! Wow I know what's on my Christmas list to myself!

Here is my interCOOLer as it is:

And how it is going to look soon, (hmm wonder if I should keep the street fighter look without the front bumper?)

Jamie, they still look like silicone hoses on there!

How much heat soak do you get from not having your heatshield on, and t=with the intercooler sat so far over the turbo?

Steven

The pipes are Mandrel Bent Steel with a red crackle finish, you cant really appreciate the pic, without seeing a closer shot, so this might help...

On average the inlet temps dropped by 2 degrees c (measured) on a 70 MPH cruise after fitting my Top Mount. Heat soak has not been a problem, even after a couple of trackdays, where I experience no brake fade due to over heating of the brake cylinder, which can sometimes be a problem.

The reason I do not have the turbo heat sheild on is that I have had our turbos on and off and simply did not have time to fit it back on, also the APS cast turbo collector has its own sheild, which doesnt interact well with the OEM sheilds.

You know what is coming next dont you

Why have they changed the design then? i notice that the pipes have brakets in them, in particular the one from the turbo to the intercooler.

Have they changed the design for the classic one? ie steel not silicone?

If so, can i change mine at no cost

Steven

ps its not an attack about the product, i just want to know why the sudden change!

Just noticed as well that they have changed the route of the turbo to intercooler pipe. Why?

Steven

They havent changed the design of the MY92-00 Impreza Intercooler, only the design of the new WRX Intercooler, so I hope that clears things up?

Hi jamie, had a look at the APS section of your site, but couldn't find any indication of prices. very impressed both by the look and and the fact you don't need to hack your car to bits to fit it!

Jamie, it still looks like you have to cut the bumper, hence the reason why there is the black finishing strips. It looks like you dont have to cut thebracket that the intercooler sits on because they provide a replacement one.

You only have to look at the grill on the aps website to see that there has been some cutting of the bumper IMO.

are you sure you dont have to cut the bumper?

steven

ps not attacking it, as i have one on my car although its a classic, and i am happy. just want to get things clear in my head, thats all.

Doesnt look much / any bigger than mine

Edited to add, doing a track day... it aint going to be overheating brake fluid that gives you brake fade...

Yes you do have to cut the bumper on the WRX, but not the bar behnind it which other Intercoolers require.

If you don't think this is big, then you need to compare it to other new WRX intercoolers, its maffiss!

Jamie, whilst i appreciate it is a large intercooler, and is certainly larger than the one on my car, it is not any larger than davids intercooler. I know as i specced the dimensions for him.

Steven

PS They do look good though

I am not saying it isn't as big as Davids intercooler, all I am saying is it is huge compared to the old R series intercooler, for the ***NEW WRX***
