so for the last 4 years my other half has been pottering around in a little 1.3 2010 mazda 2 which has been ultra reliable but as she is doing more miles now and needing more power than a food blender we started looking at cars for her.
she really wanted a scirocco but after reading horror stories of piston issues in the 1.4 and timing chain failures in the 2.0 turbo and the uncertain future of diesel I managed to sway her choice.
only other car she liked was the civic type r, I owned one a few years back and they are utterly fantastic cars so we found a really clean low mileage car down in London so went and fetched it yesterday.
2009 civic type r fn2 gt
40k
full Honda history
1 year Honda warranty but managed to get a 2nd year chucked in free of charge.
drives perfect and is still as tight as a drum,i was never keen on the fn2 shape but like the bugeye impreza its really starting to look better with age.
plans are to tint the windows and paint the calipers red, some heko wind deflectors and that's all.

Does it still have the effervescent personality of previous Type Rs? What's the cam changeover point feel like: exciting still, or softened somewhat?
IIRC, somewhat unusually (and to Honda's credit), didn't they deliberately go out of their way to ensure the FN2 was lighter than the previous gen. EP3?

its a little softer I would say, my ep3 you could feel and hear the vtec kick in where as this model you can here it but cant really feel the crossover into vtec.
lighter? I cant imagine that's true.
the brakes are sharper on this and the xenon headlights are so much better than the headlights in the ep3.
its still an eager car to drive and its more than fast enough for my mrs. it feels planted and the gear change is slick and precise, overall I'm impressed with it, always been a type r fan anyway.
I wasn't a fan of the new type r when I 1st saw it but I changed my mind after seeing one in the dealership yesterday...........stunning in my opinion but very very expensive.

If you were to get one in future, and don't find it lairy-looking enough, then how about doing this to it:
Is this the Mrs first performance car (that she obviously predominantly drives)?
She must be really excited? lol
Yeah it is, she had a 1.4 fiesta 1st, then a 1.3 ford ka, then we shared my Nissan primera gt then her Mazda 2. She drove my Imprezas aswell which she enjoyed.
The civic will serve her well, looks good, goes well and has bullet proof reliability
Nice cars, my mrs likes these too, but I plan to shuffle cars around in a couple of year and get her a nice family jeep as my next car will NOT be the family car lol.
Only downside to these are the heavy Torsen bar on rear which it should of been independent suspension like the ep3 as the handling is night n day between the both. Otherwise nice cars and yes reliable

TBH for a road car I can't see it making any difference, I gave it a little kicking this morning and it feels completely planted. For a track car then yeah the ep3 set up would be superior.
I bought one very similar last December,i really like it to be honest....only problems I have had was one of the rear calipers was sticking and I replaced the front shocks as one was leaking.

have you had any issues with the gearbox? ive read that on 07 cars there was issues with the syncromesh that's why we went for a later model.
Loved the look of these for a long time and I keep looking at sales of them thinking, hmmmmm I might get that, but would have to sell my WRX so never have.
They are great cars for the money, and as a daily they are nicer to drive than the EP.
Most of the gearbox problems are from people mis shifting, it was even worse in the EP3's.
My mate is a honda specialist and it's normally bushes, pads and disks that I see him doing on these.
keep the oil topped up and the k20 won't let you down

Yeah it will be me that keeps an eye on the oil as she is fekking useless lol. The k20 is a stonking engine..........even better when supercharged
He says with no plans whatsoever of supercharging in the future
On a serious note how do the k20's hold up under supercharging?
From what I've read on the owners club they hold up fine, I'm sure there are a few owners on there that are running 400bhp+ on the standard lump. I think the timing chain stretches if bouncing off the rev limiter, other than that I'm not aware of any major issues with it.
I was going to supercharge mine but Subaru was calling me.
Even still. 400 odd bhp is enough running through the 2 front tyres I'd of thought. It's not like the fn2 has the full mechanical slip diff of the fk2 & fk8 either.
Did you read up on the top front windscreen seal and the potential for repainting the roof?
I test drove one of these a few years back but was sadly underwhelmed. I assumed the hype about vtec would be true, but in an FK2 is barely noticeable. I bought a Nissan 350z in the end. I am still thinking of one as my daily though so its good to hear that people still like them.
