right i got volt meter out and definately light sensor, as ignition on in direct sunlight it read 0.28 volts and covered in darkness it reads 4volts and must have been done factory as hole in dash is cut perfectly and youd never do that with screen in that acuratly!

Climate control sensor as said above.
Its a sunlight sensor, the temp is behind the vent on the heater controls and this is a sunlight detector. Basically it will lower the temp in bright sunlight, and raise it in the dark, as there is less energy coming into the car from the sun.

All cars with climate control will have this sensor, and is how you tell the difference between aircon and climate.

Taken from here for an Audi A4 .http://www.audiworld.com/tech/int4.shtml
Which just repeats what I`ve already said.

SENSORS
The sensors that control the climate control unit are the sun sensor and cabin temperature sensor. The sun sensor is the dome shaped unit located in the middle of the defrost vents on top of the dash. This adjusts the climate control system to compensate for the hot sun glaring into your car. The cabin air temperature sensor measures the cabin temperature by the small vent that is located above the climate controls.

Only reason I know is I did a full climate control conversion on my last car, ripping out the whole dashboard, and replacing all the heater controls from air-con, to full digital climate control.
