Default Lambda sensor

I believe it's the one just after the turbo in the downpipe.

I have a question, I found a spare earth wire floating about that was connected to the brake fluid reservoir. For an earth I presume.

I've been trying to find where it should go and noticed that my lamda sensor looks like it should have 3 wires going in, but currently only has 2.

My question is, as it's been like this for some time without a CEL or similar. Has it made any difference?

I'll try and get some pictures posted.

Some pictures....

Think the wiring must have been chopped and reconnected when my downpipe was replaced (Scoobysport)...

Lambda sensors always have an odd number of wires - either 1, 3 or 5, depending on the type.
Anyhow, that wiring's normal for the lambda on a Classic.

Ollie
Have you asked Scoobysport about your sensor? It looks like they might have fitted what was originally a 4-wire sensor to your car, but ripped out the extra wire because there were only 3 wires coming from your loom. Seeing as the 4th wire would be the earth for the sensor signal itself, this might mean it's not doing its job properly any more. (I didn't realize the sensor signal ever needed an earth, which is why I wrongly believed they only came with odd-numbered wires - thanks trailer for pointing out my error ).

What I'd suggest you do next is check how many wires there are on the actual loom (socket-side) - it will be a 4-pin connector, but one of the pins might not have a wire going to it - and then speak to Scoobysport about what happened to your original lambda. From the reading I've done on this, the correct way to convert a 3-wire sensor to a 4-wire is to patch the sensor signal-earth into the sensor heater-earth, and this obviously hasn't been done on yours.

On the other hand, it's possible the sensor in the picture was designed from the start with that extra hole there and never had a signal-earth wire to start with, but you'd need to look very closely at yours to be able to tell, or find out exactly what the part was from where it was ordered.

A dead lambda probably isn't nearly as bad as a malfunctioning MAF, but I wouldn't want to run a car with one for any length of time.

They changed the downpipe and centre section for me about 3 yrs ago Doubt they would remember!

I've checked and the wiring has 3 wires, all with pins and the newly spliced wiring connects to each of these pins.

I just thought that the spare earth wire nearby and the empty hole on the lamda sensor might have matched up. More hunting to do now then!
