Default Clocks Help!

Hi,Recently tried to part with my scoob (96 wrx wagon) on the bay but didm't sell (thankfully)
Now it's staying it needs one thing to finish it off, the clocks.
I foolishly attempted to change the dials when i first bought it and wrecked the clocks in the process. I bought a replacement set from an sti but somethings not right.
The original clocks were reading mph as are the new ones but after fitting the cable in at the back the needle's all over the place. The other guages are fine it's just the speedo. Ive re-attempted to connect the cable but nothing works.
Any idea?

cheers

Yours works off a speedo cable, right?
It sounds as if either the connectors don't match, the connection isn't fitted securely, or.............the new speedo is b*ggered.
