ignition controled live....
ok, i need a live wire that goes off when the ignition is started but stays on when its off. basicly its for alarm LEDs (like the one on the dash clocks) i was going to piggy back off of the dash led but its to fiddly to get to the LED.
pics would be nice too
cheers

AFAIK, the only way to do this is to buy a miniature normally closed relay:
Rapid Electronics - Electronic Components item number 60-0360
If you look here: http://www.rapidonline.com/netalogue/specs/60-0350e.pdf, it shows the terminals.
You take a permanently live supply to the centre bottom terminal, and from the top right to your LED, and from LED to earth.
Meanwhile, the bottom outer two are from IGNITION live, and to earth.
You'll need to be able to solder or know someone who can.

The circuit I gave you could be set up at about £2 with a visit to Maplins.
I used to make them for people, may even have some of the stuff left. Interested?

I'll have a look at what's left, if owt. I USED to have 12V flashing LED's but they don't seem to be listed any more.

Is the way to do this not run the LED live to permanent live, and LED earth to a live that is ignition live? (i.e radio, clock etc)
That way when the ignition is off the ignition live becomes earth.
Used to work on older cars when I was younger......

By connecting constant 12v to an ignition controlled 12v with the LEDs you may be powering an accessory, albeit at a low current but enough to drain the battery. The LEDs are earthing thru something, possibly radio or a relay coil. Not enough to run the accessory but enough to provide a battery drain. You have effectively bridged two circuits.
The best way to do this is with an automotive relay out of any scrap car, look for the 87a terminal and possibly the drawing below on the side of the relay. Fords are good for this IIRC. Or they available from any motor factors for a couple of quid. Ask for an automotive 12v SPDT relay. Whilst you are at it get some crimp terminals and crimping pliers for a pucka job.
connect switched 12v to 85
connect earth to 86
connect unswitched 12v to 30
connect leds to 87a and the other end to earth, get the polarity right.
don't forget the fuses

if i run a live from the battery (instead if piggy backing off a random live under dash) you think this would solve the problem? just trying b4 i go the relay route!

It's easier than you think, just get on with it. You will have it done in half an hour which is about a quarter of the time you have spent pissing about trying to find an easier way LOL
