Hi, my question is this - does my 98 wagon have a headlight / door open buzzer? I'd be surprised if not - but if it does it doesn't work. How do I fix it?

The short answer is no, it doesn't.

You can't leave the headlights on as they are relayed through the ignition, (I can never understand why ALL cars aren't wired the same way), and there is no buzzer to tell you the doors are open either.

 

Thanks, a great help! Although I keep finding that I drive the whole way to work the next morning with my headlights on because I haven't been reminded to turn them off the previous day. Normally it's not dark enough to realise I've left them on, it's just been raining or whatever! Perhaps when I get the time I'll build a buzzer!

A buzzer would be easy: small 12V buzzer from maplins, plus a small relay, same place. Buzzer from headlights, to earth via the relay, which switches on when any door is opened.

 

Sorry Tanya, from the headlights would not work as the headlights have no power to them when the ignition is off. Have a buzzer on my sidelights just in case I leave the silly parking switch on, but that won't help you either.

Personally I drive with headlights on all the time. Hangover from riding bikes. Find it helps in the fens as people seem to have trouble judging speed when they are pulling out of junctions on these stupidly straight roads. One road I commute is 5 miles long with one bend in it, but 3 roads join at right angles and have caused a few fatalities.

Isn't there a law coming out soon that all new vehicles will have running (or dim dip) lights as per the Scandinavians?

Yes, I see that, I assumed that the op wanted to know if he'd left them on, but of course, he can't. Unless you open the door with the ignition on? Oh well.

 

Or you could leave a note on the steering wheel reminding you to open the door before you turn the engine off to see if the buzzer goes off to remind you to turn the lights off.

The sort of thing my wife insists on doing because it is just too difficult to remember to turn off the lights LOL, bless her

sorry to hijack but how do i disarm the buzzer??? where is it. its annoying and i dont want to disconnect my door switch as i want my interior lights

 

For building a buzzer perhaps you could connect to the headlight stalk switch somewhere and series it up to the door sensor. You could also tap into a 12V supply, perhaps add in a couple of diodes so you don't accidentally turn on the lamps. I haven't seen the circuit diagrams but I'm sure I could arrange something.

 

In fact, heres an idea- you could use a latching relay to hold the buzzer on which is activated while driving (when there IS power) but which only makes the buzzer go after you open the door. Because it's a latch the headlights don't need to supply the power, it could come straight from supply.

 

What buzzer? Classics don't have one.........
