Cool

Just found a guy who's doing high-brightness blue LED's for car dashboards. Apparently, they're already fitted to the standard twist-in clips and ready for 12V use.

I've mailed him to see how much he's charging, and whether he can do both the tiny ones, for the switches, and the big ones for the odd bits in the dash.

In the meantime, you can find him at http://www.damonjordan.f9.co.uk

Thought you might, Huxley
Sorry - not trying to steal your thunder - I just saw the place and thought of you lot
AFAIK, this guy only does the main twist-in bulb - he won't/doesn't do the tiny LED's for the switchgear, nor does he do the big bulbs in the dash. So, there may be some dual-sourcing required.

In any case, I'll keep you posted.

What types of bulbs are in the Scooby dash ? I have a MY96 Sport so I presume the bulbs will be the same as the Turbo?

Keep us posted plz

Thanks

No idea what sort of bulbs are in the Impreza dash - I've got a Legacy

The new-spec Legacy's use the normal twist-in bulbs for most of the dash, with two side-repeater type bulbs (with coloured condoms on) for major illumination. The switch-gear use ickle bulbs specially made, so they're going to be the awkward bit

Can't you buy the LEDs and replace them yourselves you lazy gits?? Maplins do Blue LEDs for about £2 each (a lot compared to red and the like, but well worth it..)

You can buy the LED's, yes, but they're not in the holsters. Also, the switch-gear uses different size/type bulbs, so if Huxley had a complete solution, it would have been easier!

So, none of that grief, thank you muchly

Globbits,

Has he come back to you at all?

His web site says prices are:

Prices are £8 each or 4 for £30. email for higher quantitys

There are also piccies there, can anyone confirm if they would fit a Scoob, and how many you would need?

cheers,

greg

This guy is proving as useful as a chocolate teapot! I've mailed him twice and he's just not responding

So, in the meantime, I've had my dash out (2002-spec Legacy) and my dash is illuminated by:

4*10mm sidelight bulbs with light-blue condoms on
2*3mm dashboard bulbs with green condoms on (for the digital displays only)

So, in my case, his "kit" is no use at all. I've sourced some 10mm ultra-bright LED's from RS, along with some matching (!) 3mm LED's. They should arrive tomorrow and, once I've got 'em, I'll get them in and let you know how they look.

In the meantime, can someone get their dash out and confirm their requirements for the DASHBOARD ONLY on a "typical" Impreza? RS, for example, do a discount if we buy enough LED's and, for a suitable consideration, I don't have a problem with making up a kit.....

(By "consideration", I mean enough to cover the cost of the components, postage and a "thankyou")

Richard

PS I'll look at converting the switchgear once I've got the dashboard bloo

Nah, Huxley - hadn't forgotten - just didn't mention it
You're right though. Probably worth combining brains to sort out a proper kit.....
(I'll let you know when I find my brain, so we can combine )

Bad news, I'm afraid At least, for Legacy-owners - not sure about you Impreza people.

On the Legacy dash, illumination is by 4 side-repeater bulbs, for the whole dash. Two ordinary dash-type bulbs illuminate the two digital displays, but the main illumination is by the side-repeaters, so lots of light is needed.

I've finally had time to try out these "ultra-bright" 10mm LED's - what a load of rubbish!!!!! I mean, seriously (you guys) (he said, going all Cartman ) they are weak! Nice little glow to them, sure, but nuffin even CLOSE to bright, let alone ultra-bright!!!!

Checked the values for ballast resistors and even tried upping the voltage to see what difference it made, and virtually no improvement.

So, having tried:
1) Tinted paint, to make my existing bulbs bloo
2) Bloo LED's
3) Ultra-bright, bloo LED's

I'm afraid I'm admitting defeat. As far as I can see, I can't get enough light from a big LED to make this happen.

Sorry you lot - I did have high hopes

Lightbulb

Are you forgetting something!!

Diodes and resistors also some kind of defuser as most led's do not have a wide angle lens.

If you look at the led on my page you can see it has a wide angle lens on it
