looking round car other day and found this near the bottom of the steering column.

Onbard diagnostic port, hooks the car up to the subaru select monitor and some aftermarket equioment to diagnose faults and collect real time data from the ecu.

Is this an odb2 port then? can it be used to map the ecu or plug in laptop

It is a odb2 port. Not to sure about mapping the ECU but you can certainly plug in a laptop to read engine data, fault codes, etc.

can anyone recomend a cable and software.some seem to plug direct to laptop and others seem to need an interface.seen a few on tinterweb but dont know which one to choose.
