My oil temp gauge stoped working when my AC belt sheered off, well im guessing its my oil temp, the wire goes down and into the part the oil filter screws into see pics....

As you look at the oil filter, its the thing on the left with a thin wore coming out of it.




Am i right, is it the oil temp?

Anyways, the main point was, i need a new part that screws in as the wires are broken.
What is this part called?
And can i buy a cheap replacement?

I wanted to take it out to inspect further, but was woryed oil would pour out.

Any help would be much appreated

It's called a "sender" and is comp0-atrible only with the same make of gauges AFAIK. Try the place you bought the gauges.

Alternatively, could the wires be solder together?

The gauges were fitted in japan way before i bought the car,

Can i remove the sender, or will oil pour out?
If it can be removed i will be able to sort the wires out myself, i would of thought.
Also, am i right in thinking its an oil temp gauge?

You should be able to take it off without oil coming out so long as the oil sin't under pressure, ie: engine should NOT be running.

Do it when the engine is cold, and stuff a screwed up plastic bag into the hole while the sender is out, (not TOO far in ), to avoid it weeping.

That's the correct site for an oil temp gauge, or at least, one of the sites.

Brill, i allways thought it was a water temp gauge glad its deffo an oil temp gauge tho, saves me some money!

Under further investigation, i have removed the sender

The wires have completly came out the sender, which means it cannot be repaired.
I know the gauge is Greddy, so im guessing the sender will be the same make, is there a place i can buy a new 'Greddy' sender, i have searched ebay and tryed googling it, but no luck

I don't KNOW that it wouldn't, but they do tend to be specific to one make. Remember you're working in mV, so one company's reading is another's over-reading.

Not seen or heard of that make before. They are certainly cheap. 75 quid for three gauges .

If you like your Greddy's, I'd look another sender. This gauge is cheap enough, and comes with a temp sender Auto Gauge 2" / 52mm OIL TEMP Gauge 27047SWL (W/Sender) - eBay, Tachometers, Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 13-Sep-07 10:57:07 BST)
If it was oil pressure I would probably say no, but temp is temp. If you remember the readings you used to get on your car, then you can compare, and see if its accurate or not.

I wanna avoid buying something that may not work you see, i dont like to waste money lol

The others are cheap, but at the end of the day what can go wrong with them, there just taking readings off the engine aint they...

ATM i have a boost gauge on my dash and a turbo timer an oil temp in the top glove box part.

I was gonne put the 3 matching gauges in that and remove the boost gauge off the dash, and thn just place the TT somewhere else.

Would this be right, it dosent say werther or not it will work fine with Greddy, i reckon i will give them a ring tomorrow and ask them.

I spoke with Demon tweeks, they said the sender would not work.
And that i need a Greddy sender for it to work.
They said a company called SVS would supply me with 1, i have googled for them, but no joy, has anybody else heard of them?

Greddy gauges are reckoned to be quality. I'd go for it.........if one of my Defis wanted a new sender, I'd not hesitate to pay that much.

The temp sender arrived tuesday, and i finally got round to fitting it today, all is fitted now and working fine

I've installed two types of gauge using the same sender and got the same readings. As far as I can tell, the send is just a resistor sensitive to heat. The white wire will be the signal and the black wire will be ground. Some senders only have one wire (the signal) as the sender is grounded through contact with whatever it screws in to.

Just buy something like this and see if the sender works

I know Phildodd06 is sorted but must reply to James.

You are right that the sender is just a device which has varying resistance with temperature, the gauge reads the resistance and displays the answer as a temperature. But as previously stated lots of manufacturers use different senders and each may have a different resistance for a given temperature.

So at 12 degC the sender for gauge A may be 50 ohms and gauge B 100 ohms, then at 100 degC gauge A sender 100 ohms and gauge B 300 ohms. Connect the gauge B sender to gauge A and it will think the engines at 100 deg when it's turned off. Of course you may be lucky as there are probably more people making gauges than senders so you may be lucky and find they're both using the same resistance to temp relationship. But don't rely on it.

Also some are pure resitors and some are thermisters which I think go the other way, ie resistance rises as they get hotter rather than vice verse. Fit one of them and the engine temp on the gauge will go down as the engine warms up, not big or clever....

For total flexibility my motec ADL dash has a software configurable curve, there's a library of curves for the common senders or you do your own. Put the chosen sender in a saucepan of water with a thermometer, heat it up on the cooker and every 20 deg or so read the thermometer and tell the software the temp for that resistance. That's the only time you can use any sender that you wish.
