Default rev counter problems driving me feckin nuts

I've got a my94 wrx and my rev counter is playing up - sometimes it works properly giving me the right revs for the engine noise/road speed, but sometimes it doesn't and can be as much as 2 thousand revs out i.e. revs read 2000 when they should be reading 4000. I've had the dash out to see if it was a bad/loose connection, I've done the same with the ecu and all the engine sensors I can find and still nothing. The dials are oe so the needle's not been off causing it to stick. It's got progressively worse over the past couple of months and If I don't get this sorted soon the car's going cos it's REALLY getting on my nerves. It's not that I don't like the car or that I haven't got any patience it's just really annoying. oh and by the way - it's NOT the clutch slipping!!

anyone any ideas?

First of I know nothing about the scooby rev counter. But from previous experiences with these probs it is usually the little sender/sensor unit switch which is located in/on the gearbox. Hope that's of some help
