auto-electricians, here's one for ya...
right then: gauges!
My Oil Pressure gauge has been intermittent for ages, it blips around all over the place, but generally, it seems to work, i.e. when it's on form, the correct readings are displayed.
Now then, being intermittent it can sometimes go nuts, falling past ZERO as if someone has pulled the plug out or something. This doesn't seem to be related to engine speed, although abviously there's a little movement when I blip the throttle.
Someone suggested an earhting problem - does that add up? I can't seem to get any consistency either, it's not as though it blips around going over rough surfaces or anything, so maybe it's not a loose connection?
Just wondering if any guru's could offer any advice?

I wouldn't think it is an earthing problem , IIRC electrical oil pressure guages have an oil pressure sender unit mounted near the oil filter. It works by varying the resistance ( in respect to earth ) ie the higher the oil pressure the less the resistance when measured to earth.So if you were to take the wire off the sender unit and earth it out the oil pressure guage would go off the scale as high pressure. If you have this type of sender unit then the guage needs a stable ignition fed 12v supply to the positive side of the guage and the sender unit connects to the negative side. I once fitted an electrical oil pressure guage in my Escort Twin Cam , the guage kit came with a 2 wire sensor that plugged into the back of the guage and the guage needed a 12v supply and an earth wire connected.
I reckon your problem is either a loose/poor connection on either the sender unit or the back of the guage.
