Question

Go out and buy yourself a relay, (simple on/off type with a fuse on it, or, if none with fuses, get a fuse and fuseholder too.............NOT the cartridge type for radios!)
You also need some cable, thick (28/010) and thin(14/010).

Find the live at the rear of the n/s headlight when main beam is selected, (circuit tester, etc), Scotchlok a piece of the thinner wire to it, and take this to relay terminal 85.
Take another length of thinner wire from relay terminal 86 to a suitable earth or battery -ve.

Now take TWO thicker wires from relay terminal 87, (use a piggyback connector), one to each light. Don't forget two thicker earths back to battery.

Finally conect as piece of the thicker wire from battery +ve to relay terminal 30, via fuseholder if no fuse on relay.

Hints: use a ring terminal to connect to battery terminals. Cover all spade terminals with plastic covers. Fuse sizes: assuming 2 lights on same fuse, 55w bulbs, use a 10A fuse, 100W bulbs, use a 20A fuse, 130W bulbs, use a 25A fuse.

BTW: get it done soon, the way you are doing it now is illegal

Electrician? Got loadsa dosh have you?

Seriously, take a trip to Halfords, and buy the relay, they are about £5, some spade terminals, four ring terminals, and enough covers for the spades, you'll need about a dozen spades.
They also sell the wire you need. Altetrnastively, a decent carshop will have the same at (maybe) cheaper prices.

The trick is that ALL relay terminals are numbered on the rear of the relay.
Just print out my instructions, and go for it, save yourself mucho dosh.

And yes, it really is illegal, if you've swapped fogs for drives, they MUST be controlled by the dipswitch, or it's an MoT fail too.

BTW: anywhere near me?

Using Alcazar's method you will get the spots on with main beam all the time. An alternative is to use a second relay powered by the foglight switch to make the spots switchable, but only work when main beam is 'on'. I'll leave Alcazar to explain the wiring for that one

Depending on year of car, you don't necessarily need to add relays.

On MY99 for example (with fogs operated by a separate switch) everything is already in place.
Here's the diagrams for the P1 to allow that car to have the driving lamps working as you want them to. i.e. changing from switch operated to lighting stalk operated.

This is where you'll find the relay on a '99 car..

And this will be the plug for the relay

Been a while since i done it but doesn't take long to do.
If you're not confident doing any electrical work, your local friendly auto electrician can do this in short order.
