Default JDM STI HID Headlights. Would they fit a 04 WRX!

Would JDM STI HID Headlights fit my 04 WRX, and would I have to change the bulbs or anything or would they fit straight in, as I melted my standard headlights trying to de-tango them.

Not too sure but they won't have the orange bit in.

You'll have to place them in a not too hot oven to break the seal to be able to add an orange wedge...

HID's won't work without a wiring kit..plus they are hideously expensive..unless you know somewhere to get em cheap

What went wrong with the detango ! I'm thinking of doing mine !

Ive been offered them a resonable price, what kind of wiring kit would I need and how would I do it to make them work, so i cant just put them in and they would work.

Put the oven on to high and left them in there for 6mins and when I took them out the plastic lenses had melted, and most of the light. I think I should have kept the oven door open and not shut it.

There's absolutely no need for the orange wedge, you use an orange bulb - just like you would after you'd taken the wedge OUT of a set of UK lights.

'Fraid I've no idea whether they'd drop straight in or whether they'd need an external ballast or wiring conversion - but I can assure you that they're really good and would probably be worth the effort!

I'd be very careful to make sure the looms are compatible matey or you could end up having another headlight disaster

I think ill just order a standard set tomorrow from the dealers, and save all the hassle, and then pay someone to de-tango them for me next time, would there be any Subaru specialists who would do this.

Not certain if this applies to the blobeyes, but with the bugeyes there was a significant difference with the headlamp levelling control between the STi and WRX lights as well. Entirely possible to get round, but involved more hassles.

Youve probably been offered them cheaply by someone who has had to remove them for an SVA; its not uncommon for JDM HID lamps to be fixed: they have to be adjustable to pass/be legal.

Lightbulb

At a guess they'll fit physically but you'll need to sort out the wiring for the ballasts etc to trigger from the existing wiring - putting a power relay in is one option. You'll also need somewhere to stash the ballasts in the bodywork. The units I've seen have the ignitor circuit built in to the headlamp unit rather than in the ballast.

What type of bulbs do they take for the dipped beam? It normally says on the top of the light unit - D2S is an official HID bulb. If it says H1 then they're ordinary halogen bulbs. The main beam is possibly HB3.

If the leveling wiring is the same as on the bugeye, you'll have to put your own system in as the STi lights use 6 wires opposed to 3 on the WRX - it's a ball-ache sorting it but possible.

Give me a shout if you need any further info - I had a set on my bugeye so have been through the pain barrier...

PS if you don't want them, I guess I could find them good home on an 05 model for a suitable consideration...

Here's a picture on this ad to show what the ballasts are and there mounting points are:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33710

The ballasts are mounted on the headlight. The mounting points are already on the std UK headlights.

As to the self levellers, as long as the headlight unit is a global design, then there will be mounting points for the self-leveller units. As long yours aren't melted then they may just be a simple swap over.

The JDM sidelights and dip beam are as per the UK items.

The only problem I can think of is whether the JDM connectors are the same as the UK ones.

Look in the For Sale section, I'm sure someone was selling a set from a WR1 for £250.

Send a PM to Eliot, I know he has just fitted some morettes so he may still have the originals for sale. He has posted recently in the members gallery, the black beast is finished or something along those lines.

WR1 lights are just the same as any other UK STI, tango-equipped 12V bulbs. The JDM STI has, unless you order the most basic model, detangoed HIDs, and is the only model so equipped. The US STI has doubly-tangoed HIDs

Sorry, not clear - the US car has both an orange wedge over the indicator AND an orange corner reflector, but it does at least have HIDs.

The JDM car has no orange at all except the bulb (which gives that rather naff 'fried egg' effect), but it's easy to change that for a silvered one:

Ahh - ok - can see that clearly actually in the ebay link that was posted above - and we thought we had it bad with our tango wedge

There must be a market here for someone in the UK who can supply JDM Hids and a wiring kit to enable a straight swap for the UK units ? Or am I missing something !

Were you meaning me getting in touch with Eliot?

I did and he'd got some WRX lights - not STi ones
