Unhappy Impreza P1 lamps and HID problem

Not expecting much help here as i've never heard of this before but....

Fitted a set of HID's to the std headlamps and now the P1's driving lamps don't work when on mainbeam. The new HID kit is "plug 'n' play". Very simple to fit and didn't require any wiring mods to the car to get to work. Dip and main work as they should.

If i unplug the *new* HID's from the 3 pin headlamp connectors and operate mainbeam, the driving lamps work as you would expect them to.

There is a diode fitted between two of the 3 wires in the HID 3 pin headlamp plug and i'm wondering if this has got anything to do with it. The diode was already crimped on the cables at the plug end when i got the kit.

Any clever sparkies out there able to give a suggestion as to why the driving lamps don't work when i plug in the HID's?

I've now removed the top connection from the 3 pin headlamp plug (diode goes between this one and one of the others).
Put the lights on and now there is no dip beam (expected cause i've taken the pin out) but i now have the mainbeam of the HID's working and the P1 driving lamps work as well.

So.... can anyone tell me what the diode is there for in the first place?

I haven't removed the diode and reconnected the 3 pin plug as normal yet to see if all the lamps work cause it's crimped in place and don't want to pi** about too much with the loom in case it's got to go back to the place i bought it.

Very pleased with the kit so far but would be nice if i could sort this little issue out.

Think of yourself as a pioneer, mate.

Doing something for the first time is a bit of a rarity on Scoobynet. Makes a change from "which exhaust is loudest?"

How did you fix it then?

Thanks for the reply Mike.

This thread was being overcome by tumbleweed and I couldn't see the mad flurry of replies i was getting which hopefully were going to cure my ills....

Only way i could get it done (for the time being..) was to utilise 2 additional relays in the lighting system and disregard the on/off switch for the HID's which are in the bumper.

It would have been nice to retain the option of switching them on and off, but not sure if it can be done since the headlamp HID is one filament with two positions (for dip and main), whereas the std halogen bulb is two filaments in one unit.

Thanks to AlanG cause he got the same setup as me.
