Can't remember, think it may of been black/bronze. They blow just before the summer and I didn't bother replacing them till this winter. (which i need to do now!)

Blacky bronze is usually due to oxidation within the bulb.
In other words the halogen gas has leaked out.

So usually, it's either a quality issue with bulb, or it has a micro fracture, due to shock and handling or it's getting too hot.

I've been told to expect high wattage bulbs to last alot less than 55watt eqivelents, but seeing that I have a pair which are 3+years old I'm sceptical

I use the Halfords 130W jobbies in my PIAA's and have had no problems with mine. I use my full beam a lot and bulbs are about 3 years old.
