Electrical problems - STi8 / Origin b2????
Dear all,
Has anyone come across problems with voltage surges in any Scooby, in particular in an STi8?
I fitted an Origin b2 unit last October, using the cigar lighter as the power source.
Since then it has worked prefectly - up until New Years day that is

Whilst driving along the screen sudden went blank and the unit smelt of burning.
Contacted Origin who asked for the unit back. They reckoned it could have been a voltage surge.
Received a new unit yesterday. As soon as it was connected to the dash craddle the lights came on then THE SCREEN WENT BLANK again. Same burning smell as before.
I have now stripped the whole unit out of the car and have to send it back again.
What I don't understand is:
- Why should there be a sudden voltage surge?
- The cigar lighter / connector has a fuse built into it - why hasn't this blown and protected the unit?
- When it has worked perfectly for three months why do these problems suddenly arise?
I have no other electrical problems of any description.
I also have a PSI3 SECS device fitted and this hasn't alerted me to any voltage surges / drops.
Anyone got any answers, advice or similar experiences.
Many thanks
Simon

I have read that the B2's are sensitive to this, I read something on a porsche forum a while back about the cars noisy electrics causing the unit to fall over all the time.
Subarus seem to have noisy electrics as well from what I've read.
Road angels don't seem to suffer from the noise.

I had a b2 fitted to my STi8. Every time I accelerated the Laser alert would be activated, this was due to electrical spikes, making the thing unusable. Origin recommended hardwiring, this made no difference, the only way I cured it was to change it for a Road Angel. The Road Angel lacks a number of the features I wanted, but has one major advantage, it works reliably.
It was a shame because I really liked the b2.
