Boost gauge backlight, everyone says go for the purple wire at the back of the fog switch. Obviously STi's have a retrofitted switch for the fog, and looking at mine, there is a purple wire going into it. Will this work? The actual switch isnt lit when the lights are on, its just a little flip switch thing.

I could tap into the hazzard switch for illumination as its eary to get at, but haven't got a clue which of the many wires to tap into. Any ideas?
Bonjour!

Run a cable to the centre column and pick the sidelight feed up from there.Get a test lamp or meter and connect one side to a good earth , then find the wire which goes to 12 volt when the side lights are applied. Connect this wire to the guage illumination wire. The best method of attatching the wire is to strip 1/4 inch of insulation and wrap and solder the new wire. Dont forget to wrap some insualating tape round the connection.
If the guage has 2 wired for illumination the other wire needs to be connected to earth.
Hope this helps

Good idea, do you mean from the actual stalk on the steering column? Guess you take the lid off the top and find it that way?

Yep behind the plasic cowl , you can see the loom that goes to the LH stalk , on owl28's car I think it was maybe black/red but the colours change dependant of the model. When you remove the cowl you will see the multiplug for the stalk and you can get the probe of the meter in the gaps where the wiring loom connects.
Make the connection on the loom side of the plug in case the lighting stalk ever fails , then you will be able to replace the stalk without having to unsolder and then resolder the connection.
I used a crimp on eyelet for the earth wire and connected it with the M6 bolt that holds the strenghthening bar that sits in front of your shins when you are driving , you will see what I mean when you remove the plastic surround on the drivers side.
Run the cable ( I used twin insulated ) in the same line as the cars wiring and you will be able to feed it throught the tiewrap restrainers.
The foglight switch may be a bad idea because the fog lights may extinguish if you apply main beam but will be on if dip / sidelights are used , ie the illumination on the gauge will go out when you select main beam
Good luck
