Question

As the standard headlights aren't that great without getting into replaceing the headlights just yet, what would be a good replacement bulb?

I'm looking for one with brighter coverage primarily.

I know what you mean. Two things that will help.
1} Contact Andy Batters 01943 608892. He can post out some G.E. bulbs rated +60%. They made a big difference for me.
2} There may be a bit to gain by slightly lifting the beam on the adjuster screw. This greatly improved my throw.

I have also put in a couple of relays and heavier wiring so I can run 130/90 bulbs but the +60% are just about as good.

Thumbs down

The main prob is certainly the light unit (reflector/lens) itself. It seems to put light all over the place instead of where you want it.:
I went the uprated bulb route, (Philips Vision Plus), but eventually got p*ssed off with it, and bought Morettes.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I had a look at some of the earlier threads on this subject and I've bought some Osram silver Stars from powerbulbs.com

Only £20, so no great loss if there ****!

For anybody that is interested, I have done quite a lot of research on headlight bulbs during the last ten days. Two seperate Subaru`s were used and the results were a bit of a surprise. One car already had up rated wiring to allow the use of "off road bulbs" and subsequently the STi was fitted with two relays and up rated wiring, again to allow the use of "off road bulbs".
Without up rated wiring I do not believe off road bulbs are an option but with the set up I have 130/90 W bulbs work well but not any better than the +60% GE bulbs from Andy Batters referred to above. Having read the Auto Express bulb test I was keen to try the Osram Silver Stars + 50% which were certainly good but I would rank them third in the bulbs I tested.
Two big disappointments were the PIAA H247 130/120W RRP £69.60 for the pair. These have a blue tint. PIAA Superwhite Heavy Duty 80/80W. These gave a bright white light but neither of the PIAA bulbs were as good as the other three referred to above despite their cost.
Just my personal findings although I was assisted by two other people and we all came to the same conclusions.
