JDM HID Into A UK Headlight Unit ??
Hi,
Any help or advice would be great on this, I purchased a couple of years ago a second hand pair of JDM HID lights for my 05 Blobeye came with all the genuine ballast and additional wiring etc. and a custom made loom to add them to a UK car and they have been great until recently.
They are now looking very tired and cloudy on the lens and in particular the drivers side appears to have condensation on the inside and has caused the unit to fail (I had this before and brought a new ballast as the previous one was damp, mainly due to being underneath the unit and a point for the water to collect) I have tried several time using Mequires headlight restoring polish and they aren't much better.
I think the seal on the unit(s) has perished hence the damp and was wondering if I brought a brand new UK headlamp unit can I swap the ballast and bulbs over as I seem to recall the base of the unit being the same as the JDM ones but with a blanking plate where the ballast sits ??
From what I can see comparing the two units the lens / reflector pattern looks the same, was wondering if it was an easy swap ??
I don't fancy trying for another second hand set as they are probably 11+ years old and probably prone to the same issue in time ??
Or is it easy to reseal ?? I guess it's the oven trick to soften the sealant up, clean the plastic lens from the inside and reseal with new sealant ??
If so what sealant ?? Is it worth the hassle ??
Cheers
Mark.

I haven't seen JDM units up close but if they were designed for HIDs they can't have the same reflector pattern as non-HID units. You could probably swap complete guts from one unit to other but I would try to re-seal it first. Its not that big job. I was afraid myself but managed to open mine easily to de-tango them. Here is some sealant they use and good manual videos: https://www.retrofitlab.com/en/acces...r-sealant.html I'm sure you can get that on ebay as well
I took the faulty one out of the car over the weekend to investigate and noticed on the casing has the reflector type stamped on it and say PET+PBT
just need to find if that code is the same on UK units

I have done some reading and it seems you are looking at wrong markings. PET+PBT is just plastic type for housing. Your headlights type is stamped on top right under the mount closest to the wing, next to 'E' mark. Mine is marked 'HCR' which means halogen dip and main. Yours should be marked 'DC' for HID dipped or 'DCR' for HID dipped and main. You definitely can't fit your HID kit inside UK headlights but you should be able to swap complete Japanese internals in to the UK housing if you want to. See picture for markings:
