Cool

A few of us are attending the famous Ring once again, dates are leaving on the Weds 4th April and returning late on the Sunday the 8th April.

There is a large European Scooby meet going on there that weekend from the Dutch and German owners so it would be cool to meet up with them and show them some UK Presence.

More the merrier lads so come on!!! Travel and accomodation arrangements will be confirmed closer to the time depending on numbers.

For a little teaser

OK I'm interested. Probably won't have the Scooby by April (new job etc), but I would be happy to come along as a passenger (spilt the petrol costs etc).

Cheers

Will try, unfortunately being kicked out of my present accommodation shortly, so will depend on whether I have to buy somewhere or not.

(Anyone got somewhere cheap to stay in Glasgow with a garage? )

Mark what info would you like?

The plan would be to leave mid morning on Wednesday 4th April and head towards Dover so we can either catch the Hover Ship or Euro Tunnel over to Calais @ around £150 per car, from Calais we would then drive out of France into Belgium and then over to Germany. The route is fairly simple from what I can remember so long as we don’t mix up Genk and Gent again LOL

Allowing time to stop for fuel along the way I would guess we can be at our hotel within 4-5hrs as traffic will be limited due to departing on a Wednesday, the hotel will be confirmed once numbers have been agreed but I shall be contacting the Hotel Zurburg where we stayed last time. I think the cost of 1 night varied from £18 to £40 per room, fuel is cheap in Europe so take off at least a 3rd on UK Prices. Food and Beer is extremely cheap there so a good night out will be much cheaper than the UK, I plan to see some decent nightlife this time.

The Ring is very inviting so getting up early is not a problem; I will try to arrange instructors there for the newbies to the Ring. Prices for getting on the track are cheap compared with UK track prices, from what I remember the price was 200 D Marks for 12 laps of the Ring and I would be surprised at anyone doing more than 12 laps on their first time, tickets can be bought by the lap too but it can be inconvenient.

The reason for having Thursday and Friday on track is, the weekend will get extremely busy so its much better to have a clear track instead of overtaking slow Coaches and bikers . Our Scooby comrades in Belgium / Holland and Germany are also planning on meeting at the Ring but most of these guys shall be arriving on the Friday, as we are the furthest away and Ring is certainly and experience you won’t forget I can only recommend spending at least 3 gentle days of learning laps.

Remember the Ring is a public 1-way road (Tollroad) so track insurance may not be required; please ask your insurer though. Helmets are not needed but I would recommend them! Slicks are not allowed on there but there are plenty of cheap tyre places around so not a problem.

A lot more information can be taken from lots of sites, as this is just my brief account of info.

Cheers Harj…

Night life is staying in a bar until 5am as I did last time

We can get on the track anytime of day so there doesn't need to be an early start as we do over here, plently of resterants and a city isn't too far away either.

Harj Thankyou.

The info was spot on.

I am definetley interested, and the days off work are not a problem, especially as your point of traffic congestion was made very clear, empty roads are bliss.

I am surprised though I always thought that the Ring was a private, restricted circuit not an actual road, weird.

I should be attending the Donno meet on the 18th, are you guys going??

I've sent you an e-mail, if you could keep me informed.

Thanks again!!

Mark :-)

Mark the Ring is a kind off Private / Public Road, most of the income goes back on maintaining the wonder.

I shall be at Dono on the 18th, so come and say hello and if im free I will give you a spin in the BSRT 22B.

I too will be in attendance, so if anyone wants any tips from a true Ring veteran (all of 20 laps!!!!) feel free to ask.....at your peril!
I have some great footage on mini-dv from our last trip, some of which will hopefully be going onto the Scoobynet cd, but I'll see if I can put some up as a little taster.
Watch this space....
There is no question that The Ring is the ultimate driving experience. Take every decent circuit in the UK, join them all together, put it in the middle of the Scottish Highlands, and you'd have something that would resemble the Ring as much as Harj resembles the chap from the 'Mr Muscle' ads!!
We will try and sort out main details nearer the time, so just an idea of numbers is all we need now. We can discuss it further with those of you that are coming to Donno.
Regards.

Stef.

What Harj didn't mention was the brakes. If you don't have AP 6pots (surely not everyone has them ) then it's worth taking a spare set. If you plan an heavy, late braking. When I was there, a Scoob and an Evo VI were up on stilts swapping pads and discs.

Just to clarify.

The ring is treated as a public road in german law. You need to ensure you take with you your driving license, a green card or equiv for you insurance, the registration documents for the vehicle. You will also need a passport.

I strongly recomend you take out some health insurance for the trip, you don't want to get a bill for the air ambulance and hospital costs.

You will also need to carry a spare set of bulbs and a warning triangle in the car at all times and ensure your tyres are German road legal, it is a public road.

Basically cover your ****, because things can and do go wrong, even if that means you are OK, someone else may claim against you.

Remember this is NOT a track day and you have to treat it like a public road. You will not be indemnified against damage to other vehicles, if you damage someones property they will claim against you.

It is the craziest public road on the planet, but still a public road.

Hope you guys have fun, not sure if i will be going on a public day on the ring quite yet, i have some **** to tidy up.

Thanks for the morbid comments John

John is correct and everything he says should be taken into account!

Brakes? from personal experience with std 4 pot brakes there was hardly any wear, Some people may push it. I seem to remember saying to everyone it was really easy on the brakes??? About 3 or 4 major braking points from what I can remember but it would be safe to bring some spare pads.

I'm still interested, although I'd like to look up costs health (and possibly travel) insurance.

Anyone got any web sites to browse?

Cheers,

Chris.

Chris ask your credit card company about Health and Travel insurance, mine cover me. I think most companies do or if not try an independent company.

I suppose theres nothing wrong with being too safe incase the unfortunate happens on the way over.
