Brakes? from personal experience with std 4 pot brakes there was hardly any wear, Some people may push it. I seem to remember saying to everyone it was really easy on the brakes??? About 3 or 4 major braking points from what I can remember but it would be safe to bring some spare pads.

[/quote]

When we went there last year (Elises, not Scooby's) I went through a set of front brakes. It depends on the track condition (dry vs wet), how heavy your car is and mostly on the pad material you use. I was using a very soft pad, which made things a lot worse. It is very heavy on the brakes in all but the wettest conditions; the saving grace is that there are long straights that allow you to cool down the brakes. I saw many a car come back into the pit-lane car park with smoking pads. I suspect that there are parts suppliers in the area, so rather than all take a whole set of pads each, folks with similar brakes may want to take a set between them for emergency changes and rely on buying them locally otherwise (they are almost certainly cheaper). Of course you will want to verify the availability before you go.

The Scottish Elises will be going in May, so try and leave some tarmac on the track for us :-)

BTW, on the subject of damages note also that if you spade it into the armco (and believe me, one of you will) you need to pay to have that section replaced if you dent it, at the discretion of the track management.

Matt, I'm interested. I've got a potential offer from Ian/555 if his car gets to him in time. I live in Stoke.

Harj, thanks for the pointer.

Question

Does anyone know the opening times for the ring this year? I checked the official site, but they did not have their English pages up.

Thanks

No, nobody does. They're not going to be released until the end of this month. I'm just glad that you can rely on Harj, Stef and co to have not booked their Channel crossings yet. So don't ink in the dates mentioned earlier in this thread unless someone has an inside line to the track management.

Did you attend any driving courses yet Sonu? DO IT, it's worth it. At least get yourself down to one of the SIDC track days and grab an instructor. It'll make Germany that much more enjoyable ("had to reword this sentence to stop the muppets taking the p155".

Tony,

yea, I'm a ****e driver, but hey, I'm not in it for going fast .

Mind you, driving an \\M is totally different to a Scoob.

Have you got your gearbox sorted out?

Thanks

Sonu,

I'm not having a go and I didn't really want to let everyone know that you're not a quick driver. Trust me, regardless of your objectives you will have a much better time if you get some instruction before going out again. It can't be as much fun when you're constantly looking in your mirrors for the next flying Subaru/Porsche/BMW/R1. You'll understand once you have raised your game.

I don't criticise your approach at all, much more sensible than the guy I saw/practised my first aid on last time. He was about 5 foot in the air and upside down whilst still doing about 80mph when I came around a corner at 100+ (as a passenger). We had a big slide down the grass/bog alongside the circuit but got away with just clipping the armco. My driver took one look at the blood that was all over the roof of the upturned car, obviously didn't fancy it and promptly insisted on running up the hill and around the corner to flag down other cars. This was without even looking inside the car properly.
I had just witnessed the destruction of this car and when I saw the blood everywhere I really thought that I was going to find a decapitated or badly mutilated corpse when I looked inside. Not a pleasant prospect.

Driving within your own limits is definintely the way to do things, the penalty for losing the car at this circuit is likely to be severe. So if any of you suspect that you have more ambition than skill, please stick to Silverstone. My last two trips have been spoilt by members of my group being involved in incidents and that's not fun for anybody. I don't want to spend any more weekends talking to the Polizei or trying to calm down panicing Germans (or even worse, friends) whilst trying to carefully extract them from their destroyed cars. For those of you who can drive sensibly, come on out to Germany and have a blast. There's no place like it and people drive at all speeds. If you're not capable of being sensible, stay at home. Apologies for the grim tone of this, but I have come across the consequences of the p1ss poor driving of some members of this community before. I still remain staggered at the stupidity, incompetence and arrogance involved.

Most of the people that I know on here do drive sensibly and competently but there is a significant minority who don't know what they're doing and don't realise this. If you're slow, so be it. Driving can still be fun for you. If you try to match people who are better than you, you will lose it and that will most likely hurt alot at the Nurburgring.

Harj,

It depends on dates really. I have alot of commitments already this year. I'd be happy to lead you guys out again, but if Paul's towing John's Westie again I'll make sure that I lose him (or at least the trailer)this time. We'll talk more once the dates have been released. I'm definitely not going Hoverspeed this time. Stef's a bad influence and keeps me at the track too long so we are guaranteed to miss the last sailing (again).

Boys, as I said in the last post about this subject if you need help in arranging things or anything then let me know as we will be there that weekend. Also as a side line is anybody coming down from Scotland that would be willing to bring over a set of 15" wheels from CAMK's house if I get you the address.

Apparently we, the German Impreza club have about 30 scoobs going that weekend.

Hi Tony - how's tricks - we met at the ring last year when you were collecting your repaired car.

If you cannot make April then you could always try and be there in May when the Scottish Elisers are going - now you have your car back in one piece you could show us how it should be done :-) BTW I agree with you about the hazards of people driving beyond their abilities; it spoils it for everyone else. If you cannot have fun without being out of control try skyboarding or something else where you cannot hurt someone else.

See you,
Robin

Hi Robin,

Nice to hear from you again. I noticed your first post on Scoobynet the other day and recognised the name instantly so no need to reintroduce yourself. I also understood your advice about brakes Thanks for the company in September. Monday would have been pretty dull without you, David and the other guys to entertain me. I might take you up on the offer for May but we can speak nearer the time and after the calendar has been released.

Looking forward to getting back out there, we should be quite evenly matched in the twisty bits.

Well Tonys comments are actually correct. Having been in a Mercedes C43 AMG (as a passenger) not that long ago that ended up on its roof and nearly killed me , I can vouch for the point of driving within your abilities.

The lad that was driving was clearly distressed but not half as much as the bollocking I gave him for what he did.

I am going to hopefully attend the ring, but only as a spectator and for the social jaunt. I had the pleasure of driving some serious bits of kit on the road and at pace from time to time and I would never again put anyones lives in danger or looking deeper into it, my own. The ring does require some confidence in your ability, and I am confident...dont get me wrong, but I am by no means Hakkinen or Schumacher. Harj, Stef and others (Tony mainly being a serious ring veteran) will vouch that its tight and some bends have 2 foot width of grass then a concrete wall. Given the fact that there is no speed limit and no restriction on the track other than your bottle and guts it could be nasty.

Now, dont think that I am being negative because I am sure if your new to this malarky Stef/Harj/Tony will take you out to point out the dangers etc etc and they are probably three people I would trust myself to teach me....to have courage you have to have fear. Fear this track and you will do well, disrespect it and you become one of the people on the road in paint with a date and some signatures from grieving friends.

This would be a proper proper good few days away, I am sure with the right group we can make it a safe and well worthwhile trip!!

If I can, I will make it. In whatever car, probably a comfy 4.0litre something to keep pace on the way

Harj,

Is that the Weds, Thurs, Fri shown above? Or do you mean for the following week? In which case, whose bringing the van full of spare parts?

Rumour has it that you have Stef's tape from October. If that's right can you bring it along to Donno on Sunday. The guy with the white RS500 has been giving me stick for months about getting that tape.

Apparently "my mate" (who I would like to point out I don't know at all ) relieved him of some money on the promise of sending him a copy which he has been eagerly awaiting for several months.

Harj,

I've got the circuit opening times for your trip now mate They are:
4 we 17.45 - 19.30
5 th 17.45 - 19.30
6 fr Closed
7 sa 17.00 - 19.30
8 su 8.00 - 14.00
16.00 - 19.30

I guess that you're only going for the crack then. I think that Stef will probably sulk and stay at home.

Seriously though, the big weekend is two weeks later. The Dutch club is going on the 15th and 16th. I think that many of them will do one day only and avoid the expense of staying overnight (£20 for the room......£40 for the beer).
11 we 17.45 - 19.30
12 th 17.45 - 19.30
13 fr 8.00 - 19.30
14 sa 8.00 - 19.30
15 su 8.00 - 19.30
16 mo 8.00 - 19.30

See you at Donington and we'll sort something out there.

Harj u bitch!!!!!

Can't go then, dates are too close to my 2 holidays. Can't get work to give me another 3 days off, when I'm taking 5 weeks in 2 months!!!! not even at local government! and even if I could, that would only leave me 2 days left for leave, to last me until 31st March 2002

Are we going to look at going October time again, as we did last year. I HOPE SO

Nice one Harj,

I had the good fortune to be sitting in that RS500 during that lap. After the first two miles I was resigned to dying within the next few minutes because that car was EVIL. No traction at all. It was snapping away at 90mph in a straight line. It wasn't until we got to Breidscheid (half way round) that I can clearly remember thinking that maybe, just maybe, I might actually survive the lap.

I don't think that Stef was close enough to catch the the worst moment in all of its glory. We hit a kerb on the crest before Pflanzgarten 1 and were launched into the following right hander on the most awful line at some ridiculous speed. Even the driver didn't like that one.

Roll on Easter,
Tony

Oh no, the stuff at the beginning paled into insignificance compared to this one, even though that was enough to convince me that I was going to die. This was around km 16 where there's a big yump in the braking zone prior to a long 95mph right hander. It's the corner with the gravel trap.
