Question

Hi there.

I was wondering if anyone out there has fitted the official Subaru guage pack (oil temp, oil pressure, and boost). If so can you let me know what it's like (are the guages lit when you have the headlights on for example). Thought I might get one fitted to my UK STi7 (and it doesn't cause any warranty issues)

From the subaru web site....

Cheers,
Iain

Why not the STI one?

Neither will be cheap.

yeah i've got the subaru factory fit set - pretty good actually... they have worked fine since new, although do they light up, they have a clear light, as opposed to the green of everything else!

the best bit is that the cover section is exactly the same as the rest of the dash, which looks very slick indeedy

Tom (RUM*)'s got em. Not bad. Personally I'd look for an after-market option as these are IMHO expensive for what they are.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Ken, any idea where I can get the STi from? I've got the new STi accessories brochure, and they just show the standard type (i.e. the ones I showed in the original post).

Chairk, any idea if the aftermarket ones will fit in the standard pod, (I'd like it to look like part of the dash rather than stuck on afterwards) and whether they'll affect the warranty.

Cheers,
Iain

Hi Iain, the gauge pack and a lot of other nice bits are on the Subaru accessory site in Japan. I would drop a mail to MRT who seem to be able to get virtually any STI bits and see what they can do. There is also an STI boost gauge only option.

They look to be nice quality.

Converting Yen to pounds they come out at £616 for the full pack and £169 for the single gauge.

Some nice Japanese to English translation (Bablefish assisted)

"The large-sized (phi 60mm) of the boost gauge, the oil pressure gauge and the oil temperature gauge at electronic type 3 connected meter, also visibility of nighttime has improved with transmission proof and luminous guide. Peak hold mode and warning setting functional attaching. In meter STi Genome logographic mark entering. * Sport single meter (the STi Genome)"

As I said before - expensive!

Iain, whilst they only have piccies of old shape I believe they have bug eye console as well. Give 'em a ring.

Just to cheer me up how much are Subaru asking for 3 gauges and a pod.

cheers,

Iain,

You definetely need to look at 3rd party ones then, the Subaru ones aren't going to give you much change out of a grand fitted are they! There are various people doing Defi's fitting for £550ish.

I asked Scoobymania about pods and they said:

There are several pod options original Defi (wavy top deep recess for
gauges) Injection moulded plastic (not painted) are around £73.00 (ish).
(But a bit garish IMHO).

We have had our early model (wavy) pattern pods "adapted" by grafting them
on to the clock unit itself, they come colour matched to the interior.

Prices are £130.00 (outright purchase, you keep your old clock unit
moulding) or £80.00 (exchange, you hand over your old clock unit moulding).

We will (when time and demand permits) do a straight topped pod for MY01.

regards,

greg

Defi.

A mate's dropping by with them fitted in an STI7. I'll let you know what I think after seeing the Subaru and defi unit.

The Subaru unit is no way worth that sort of money, IMHO. That's scandalous.

Sorry, just re-read...

6 hours labour? 6 (six) hours? THAT IS ABSOLUTELY EXTRACTING THE ....

Admittedly this experience is on an old Impreza, but it took me 2 hours all in. And I have no mechanical clue whatsoever, never having taken those bits of a car apart before. 6 hours is absolutely scandalous. If someone quoted me that, I'd would have completely lost it with them. I'd at least be asking them why it would take so long.

Sorry, I'm off on one here, but that really is gouging you for all you're worth so I'd want some justification!

Yep sounded a bit long to me as well. Apparently they've only done one before, and it took them that long to do it, (think they're all mechanical gauges so vacumn piping etc needs to be fed into the cockpit).

If I went the Defi route, can anyone suggest someone that could fit them (in Swindon or the surrounding area ideally)...

Cheers,
Iain

Defi suppliers I know (I think all will fit) are as follows. Prices vary from supplier to supplier. I'm getting mine fitted (to MY00) Monday by Scoobymania so will have piccies later.

NF Europe - Derby http://www.nitrousformula.co.uk
Nitosport http://www.nitosport.co.uk/

Robinsons quoted me £120 + £50 fitting + VAT for the single boost MY01+ guage out of the Subaru/Prodrive catalogue. This fits sort of in front of the speedo/tacho unit, attached to the steering column I think.

I thought this price was okay - except I don't understand the units of measurement shown on the pic. Everyone on hear talks in BAR or PSI, and this guage seems to be neither...

Robinsons were also over 100 quid cheaper than any other Subaru dealer in the area for my 30k service. These people appear to have a clue on the charging front

Just put up antoher post in general,

I've just had the carbon Defi pod put in by Nitosport and it really is fantastic.

Groovy carbon fibre effect pod
Backlit (green)
Boost, oil pressure and oil tem gauges
Control unit (mounted neatly in ashtray apeture)
Record and playback functions
adjustable warning limits
Peak display function

Soooo cool that I can hardly keep my eyes on the road. Also although I would say this, the Nitosport stuff is MUCH better value than the Subaru stuff.

I'll try and post a pic, but there's already a link to the Nitosport website on this thread.

Cheers,

Simon
