Odometer....km or miles???

Does anyone know weather or not the odometer is changed over to miles when the speedo gets changed from kph to mph on import cars?

if you change the backing for the dial i.e. just change the position of the numbers, then its still in km
..if yo uchange the speedo drive (speedohealer etc.) then you have miles
