airbag burn
Just after a little bit of advice.
Been speaking with a friend of mine and she was involved in a crash last night (Not a Scooby).
Luckily they are both o.k just aches and bruises, but the airbags went off.
1. Drivers airbag deploys, driver got a headache but hes fine.
2. Passenger airbag goes off, now her face is cut, bruised and burnt.
Now she doesnt remeber too much but seems to remeber an explosion.
Now the question is, if the airbag went off would it burn her?? Or do you think the airbag was at fault??
Many Thanks.

The airbag is triggered by an electrical switch which sense the deceleration forces, it sends an electrica; charge to the airbag, there is some powder or crystals in an area behind the airbag, this is explosive, when the bag is triggered there is basically a small explosion, the pressure from this fills the airbag.
So, yes she is right she did her a small explosion, most people get scared by the burning smell, they just assume the car is on fire, thankfully not normally the case.... and she may well have got slightly burnt from the blast i presume, although the airbag is designed to deflate quite quickly, so maybe the hot air coming out of the bag did the damage to her face...
I hope all are and will be fine!!!

air bags can burn occasionally its partly to do with the materials (explosives) used to make it explode and of course the gases get very hot, but the main thing is of course your friends are both ok!

The bags are made of a material thats quite rough to the touch, this along with the inflation speed/force of the bag can cause abbbrasions to the face when contact with the passenger is made...... out of interest when i was in the car trade sometimes we had to detonate old airbags before sending them back to the manufacture as obviously sending explosives in the post is a bit of a no no,if you have ever seen one of these things going off you will understand that there can be some cuts and bruises to the occupents of the car,but without them the injuries would be much much worse.
