Default STI Key Blank.

Hi people!

Want to get an STI key for my 2001 WRX and remove the hopelessly large standard key
Seem them on Scooby Mania but they're £29, which seems a little steep!

But also seen them at Easy Street Motors http://www.esxmotorsports.com/products/html/accessories.htm (in the US) at $25 (or around £14)!

There shouldn't be any differences, should there? as long as the key measures a minimum of 3.5 cms.

I have a mate in the US, so would get him to order it and bring it over for me, to stop Her Majesties Customs sticking duty on it

Cheers for your assistance!

If its a UK car then these won't work as they won't contain the transponder for the immobiliser.

Ahh right, I didn't think 2001 models had the transponder chip within the key, thought it was only the Blobeye onwards?

Although it had to house something, due to the size.

Looks like I'll have to stop being a tight **** and shell out the £30.

Cheers,

Charlie

2001 cars (Bugeyes) DO have a transponder in the key as Richie says

The transponder chip can be removed if you want the STI key and don't mind disabling the immobiliser.

If you intend to use the STI key with a post 2001 UK model (with the alarm transitter incorporated into the larger UK key), then you could purchase the older SACC3461 transmitters which can be programmed to operate the existing alarm and can be attached to a key ring alongside the STi key.
The standard Sigma alarm unit from 2001 MY isolates the starter motor in addition to the transponder immobiliser.

If you want to retain the full security of the vehicle, you could even try to fit the transponder chip (removed from the larger UK ignition key) into this separate alarm remote, rather than leaving it in the vehicle and effectively having the transponder immobiliser permanently disarmed.
