Excuse a newbie, but what's a knocklink? Sensor? What does it do? Does it break often?

A knocklink measures detonation in your engine (not good) alerts you to the severity through a line of LEDS from green (OK) to Red (STOP NOW). As far as I am aware these do not break often at all.
