I noticed a few scoobies at Donno on Sunday with racing harnesses.
Anyone got experience of using these during spirited driving on the road
(They use existing seat belt anchor points and the shoulder belts fit through the slot at top of seat).

And before anyone talks about legality, my grpA 205 is fitted with Sabelt 4 point harnesses...and passes MOTs

I use the Sabelt 3pt harnesses on trackdays as you just use the original belt mounting point for the rear (no drilling). The main difference is under heavy braking as you don't have to lean on the steering wheel. I wouldn't normally be braking this hard on public roads though.

They are also very restrictive when tensioned properly.

I have 4 point Sabelt harnesses in my scooby
and find them extremly usefull when on full chat down twisty lanes...
They keep me tight in the seat and you are able to control the steering so much more without moving an inch in the seat.

Mine are fitted to the existing anchor points without the need for extra drilling!

quick question folks, was supposed to have my scoob by now, but still not ready...... Can you get these harnesses to fit correctly with the old WRX seats? I mean around 94, where they just had the one smallish hole below the headrest. Thanks

Thanks guys

Could you confirm which existing anchor points you are using ?
i.e. REAR - connect to release mechanism or anchor bolt for mechanism ?
RIGHT - connect to point at bottom of inertia reel ?
LEFT - connect to release mechanism anchor bolt ?

Are you 'clipping' onto the existing anchor points or screwing in new eyebolts ?

I guess a picci would make it clear though

My 205 has Sparco seats with left/right harness slots. Has anyone had a problem with the single slot in the scooby seat allowing the belts to rub their neck ?

Just remember one thing guys. If you are going to use these on the raods, they need to have the E mark on them.

If they dont have these, they are NOT road legal.

I've had this idea for ages, for a four-point harness which simply clicks into normal seat belt fittings for track days, and unplugs for road. Something like this:

Rear - fix another short strap and female socket to the far-right-hand mounting point under the seat.

Front - get a right-hand passenger stalk and female socket, fit it to the driver's door pillar mounting.

Get a four-point harness, cut off the car mountings and replace with standard male Scooby seat belt plug-ins.

You now have four female attachment points, and a harness with four male plug-ins. Clunk-click in seconds. I've been through it with my dealer and it's fine in theory, but requires the purchase of about £350 worth of seat belts, most of which is cut up and thrown away. Then you need a facility which can securely stitch the new male fittings to the harness. I guess we're talking £500 at the end of the day.

Anyone got a similar idea at sensible money?

Is it possible to use the existing points on the sides of the seat, and still have the regular 3-point harness in place?

I've thought about getting a 4-point harness, and use the lower rear anchor points for the upper pair, and the lower sides up front for the lower pair...does it make any sense?

The only problem with a three point harness, is that the third strap needs to go straight back...... This would require a plate to be made between the two seat belt holders.

Question

One of the lower 2 points are causing me headache, on the inner side (towards the console), any eyebolt could be fitted on the stock anchor point...but on the outside, there's very little (or no) room for such a bolt...(?)

I've got the above mentioned Willans that I posted about ....... they go to all the existing points and need no mods at all.......just unscrew the bolts and replace them with the eyebolts supplied...... it really is only a 10 minute job.......and you can retain the existing seat belts and fixtures

I've been interested in fitting harnesses for some time for track days. It is possiable to 'clip in' and then 'clip off'. I don't fancy them in the car all the time and would only like to fit the needed eyelets once.

.....jeezus guys ..listen to me cos I'm not saying this any more .....buy the previously mentioned kit......swap existing bolts for the supplied eyebolts.......harness clips in and out as required.........mail me before next track day and if I'm going I'll show you.......alternatively I'll be at the Worcester meet on Sun if you're local........I expect Jerry will miss it

Right, Sabelt 3" red 4-point harness *almost* installed.

Sorry to be a major pain...but how on earth am I supposed to fit the lower left side strap (right for U that's driving on the wrong side), the one towards the door...there's absolutely NO room there, besides the anchoring point is well hidden behind a sheet of plastic...

All other points didn't cause any grief at all.

And on top of that...the outwards rear bolt on the seat isn't the same size bolt as all others, so the supplied eyebolt wouldn't fit... Damn.



Any tips/ideas?

Jerry.
Simply remove the piece of plastic to reveal the existing seat-belt achorage point. It just pops out when you've movee a few other bits of trim. They're all very easy to replace.

Are we loking at any particular torque setting for thye anchoring bolts?

12lb/ft springs to mind for some reason, or should they just be as tight as you can?

I can't find it right now, but one of the common belt makers does make a belt that has a seatbelt type QR on the bit going to the back. Attach the hip strap with the o rings as suggested and use the QR to remove the rear part without poking bits of the belt through the gap in the back seat.

Shouldn't affect insurance, at least it didn't in my last car. As long as they're approved for road use they're mot ok and insurance shouldn't be a prob (they are safer than the factory ones after all!)
Could be proved wrong though (Flame suit on)

Also, I don't know what models/seats these are being fitted on but I have a 3-point one recovered from my last car. It uses eye bolts and the tail strap detaches so you can have passengers in the back. The problem is there is no room between the drivers seat and the handbrake housing to fit an eye bolt so it's just sat under my stairs. (MY93 WRX)

Just to be a pain, but is there not a 3 pointer avalable with a self tensioner at the rear that just plugs into the rear belt clip point. Or am I talking ollocks agian ?
