Question

I just can't get along with the bus like wheel on my MY99. I would like to change it for a smallet momo, however I would like to know how I can get around the air bag light that will obviously come on when I change to a non air bag set up?

Normally I'd just take the bulb out, but since it's a twin-airbag setup that's probably not the best idea. IIRC you can put a resistor across the terminals of the airbag connector which makes it think a bag's still connected, although I can't remember the value to use.

PS Wanna sell me your old Momo and bag? I've got the horrible even more bus-like pre-99 wheel.

Thanks for the replies. I'm quite please as I thought about a resistor myself!! As for selling - Once I'm happy with the new setup (why I wouldn't be, I'm not sure, but still) Then I can think about it. I'll keep your details.

No probs mate, sounds good to me cos I really want to change my horrible pre-MY99 wheel while keeping the airbag, but I'm in no hurry for it. Hope to hear from you once everything's fitted and working.

Paul.

Paul, Just as a matter of interest, where are you in Scotland?
A guy at work is from East Kilbride and travels back home every once in a while, just thinking that this could be an easy way of
'doing a deal' should I decide I'm happy with a new wheel.
Probably a long shot but worth asking.

Cheers

Could do mate, I'm about 30 miles from EK so that wouldn't be a problem. Keep me posted and hopefully we can sort something out

First glitch, no boss listed for the '97 on - can't see why a pre
'97 would be diff to a '99, but will check it out.

Question

Now I'm following this with much interest, as I've been fancying thr Momo Commander in black and red for ages. Only thing stopping me is that the airbag is OE: does this mean it has to be there for MoT, and would it need to be put back when the car was sold?

No, AFAIK the airbag isn't part of the MOT except maybe the warning light might cause a fail if it stays on. Should therefore be fine using the resistor as discussed here.

As for resale time it's entirely between you and the seller whether they want the OE wheel with airbag fitted.

Might go down the aftermarket wheel route myself if I don't get the Momo with airbag. For some reason I prefer the idea of having an airbag even though I'm not too convinced of their benefit. Saying that some aftermarket wheels are definitely far nicer than even the Momo OE one never mind the bus wheel I have fitted!

Have just been informed that the splines are different on the '99 cars (I assume that that means all airbag cars). Anyone any ideas???

Can't say for sure but I'd be surprised if they are because people on here have definitely fitted OE Momo airbag wheels to pre MY99 cars and I don't remember there ever being any mention of different splines.

Hopefully someone who has done this wheel change can confirm?

Have a look at this thread. Seems to confirm what I thought that MY99 Momo wheels can be fitted directly to older models which would mean that the splines must be the same.

Let me know if you're still going to do the upgrade and how you get on.

Ok,

I've just upgraded the ecu so funds are now at a less than healthy level just now. I'll let you know as and when anything changes.
