He's obviously not the only one who isn't the sharpest.
Stevebt - can you see anything in that which says,
I can't.
Shortening the gear lever will provide you with a shorter throw, and in effect, will give you the quickshift feel. It may not be as good as a quickshift, but every little helps.
Incase this sounds like crap to anyone - Imagine if your gearstick was a foot longer. How far would the throw from first to second be? Much futher than standard i feel!

My theory is correct, but i'm sure you are right Stevebt. The improvement will hardly be noticeable. I do however remember somebody else who did actually rave about shortening the gear stick and said it felt great.

I cut 1½ inches off my gearlever, I can now insert CD's when on the move. I bought a Momo gearknob so I didn't need to replace the thread. Gear selection is easier now. Try it & see.

Ben, got it from Halfords for 40 notes I believe.
In all seriousness, I'd go for a quickshift. I bought a GGR one second hand for less money than the gearknob on here, and it's definitely worth it. Never tried the cutting down and retapping, but as mentioned it doesn't move the pivot point...
The JW racign one does seem very well designed - I saw one being fitted to P20SPD's car the other day and it is great. Adjustable, and generally a well thought out bit of kit.
Sorry for not replying sooner, I lost this post - honestly!!!!!

i have the jwracing one as chiark says, and is very effective. It is completely adjustable to suit your own needs.
you just pull the old lever out after disconnecting the linkage and put in the new one. IIRC there is not much difference in length of the stick between the standard and the jwr one. The difference is that the point where the linkage connects to the gearstock is adjustable on the jwr one.
Basically the higher up the stick you have this connector the shorter the throw, the lower down the longer. The pivot point stays the same, its just the linkage that moves.
To try and demonstrate how the principle works put you elbow on a table with a ruler resting on your forearm about an inch from your elbow, with the other end of the ruler at the edge of the table. Now move your arm in the direction of the other end of the ruler and see how much it moves off the edge off the table. Now repeat but with the ruler 2 inches higher up.
You should notice that the ruler passes the edge of the desk alot further.
In principle your method of shortening the gear stick has its merits, but you are lowering the height of the lever, thus have to reach further with your hand, hence why it probably is as noticble as against a proper quickshift.
Hope that sounds clear

Steve's quick shift came from J W Racing and I think they#re around 100 quid or so, plus VAT and delivery...
