Default car doesn't seem to be registered on DVLA database

Hi I hope someone has can help me or just give me advise

I am due to pick up an R reg classic tonight I have just tried to insure it. However my insurance have said the reg R120 GNA does not appear to be registered on the DVLA system. I have tried to get a hpi check and an autotrader car check, but still no luck they to cant find the car... So I have rand DVLA and they have confirmed the reg "R120GNA" is not registered or exist but he did say it might just be a mistake on the plate the reg is defo R120GNA as I took a picture of it...I am really confused if the reg is wrong whats the fella selling it hiding??
I am now not sure if its an import or a UK car

any help or advice would be great

Regards Jim

Have you seen a V5 document for the car?
Could be a ringer but if it was on the road it would have been picked up by ANPR's I would have thought.

Sticker over the number plate is usually to avoid being caught running off without paying for petrol..........

That would be enough to make me walk away personally. Plenty of good examples out there so anything that isn't 100% right is probably best left.
