Question re: insurance payout

My car is quite high mileage for its age. If it was to get written off, can they find the mileage if the LCD screen was *accidentally* broken??
Reason I ask is I dont wanna get screwed if some1 else was to smack into me as the car is on finance. Reading a thread bout some1 else in same situation has shown they end up with a debt on a car they dont have, bit scarey when it isnt your fault... The more value the better, as the car is in A1 condition...
