Insurance Category 'D'

anyone know what this means?
My friend has just found out that his car is the above and doesn't know what it means.
I presume it's a write off of some description. Stolen, smashed etc.
Anyone know for sure?

Mate, a cat D is the only type of write off worth considering IMHO.
this is from www.hpicheck.com -
Category A:
Scrap only - this vehicle should have been crushed. It should never reappear on the road and there are no economically salvageable parts. It is of value only for scrap metal - e.g. a totally burnt-out vehicle.
Category B:
The bodyshell should have been crushed. The vehicle should never reappear on the road, but it can be broken for spare parts plus any residual scrap metal.
Category C:
Vehicle extensively damaged and insurer has decided not to repair.
Category D:
Vehicle damaged and insurer has decided not to repair.
Category F:
Vehicle damaged by fire and insurer has decided not to repair.'
Lots of CAR D's get repaired as often the cars have had little damage, worth checking it properly though...

I looked at a cat D car a while ago. HPi advised me that it was worth approx 20% less than the book value of the car.
Annoying if you find out afterwards, to say the least!!
