It will cost your mum a huge increase, and you will only be insured for occasional use, contrary to popular belief, you have to name the main user, and if its you then you need your own insurance.

budget £1500-3000 tpft

although many companys may not cover you, even as a named driver on your parents policy..

sad to say, statistically your an accident waiting to happen.

get a clapped out fiesta, run it for 4 years to build up your ncb, then once youve got that look at a scoob

good luck

It is my mums car, so I will just be the second driver occassional use. Can't afford nor have the inclination to run my own car as I have a motorbike I don't want to give up.

My insurance on an Impreza turbo @ 19 was £2100 in my moms name, with no NCB. She's 50 with 1 accident in the last 5 years. So in theory it should be a fair bit less on a sport, they're well slow!

If it's a sport (as stated) and not a turbo you won't have any problems. I learned to drive in my mum's sport and her premium was only increased by £350 with me added on fully comp.

Small fortune for a 52, as it'll probably have to be fully comp.

Why buy a sport when you can get far cheaper insurance on other cars that handle better, look better and are built better?

What a selfish mother - not prepared to sell her 52 plate car to buy a hot-hatch (or chav car) for her son to drive occasionally

That will be simple they will just have to look at the mess she leaves in side of it.

The idea is not to try and make a claim.

Would rather drive the scoob, even if it isn't a proper one lol

The thing has lost to much in depriciation to sell.

Will still be better than what most 18 year olds drive. And if you look to upgrade to a turbo in a few years you will find it easier to get quotes than it you'd been driving a 1.2 corsa/fiesta

As Moley says it won't be too bad provided she has some NCB. I was on my mum's Impreza 1.6GL (group 10, sport is 13) at 17, £1100 FC with 0NCB (have since realised she probably could have transferred her full NCB from her classic car onto that policy to get ~70% off, gutted!), £750ish the next year with 1NCB; then I put it in my name at 19 for £1800 with 0NCB, £1000 with a few mods and 1NCB, and just got it for £780 with 2NCB and a few more mods. To serve as comparison, my mum insured her 2.0GL at the same time for £300ish with full NCB.

Yes, I'd have been screwed if they'd asked the neighbours who drove the car most or whatever. I'd say 75% of my mates did the named driver thing, it's virtually unavoidable even on bangers. I know we shouldn't have done it and were potentially risking a lot, but the insurance industry should shoulder some blame IMHO - they ought to give a tollerable quote (but with large excess) for new drivers, then whack up the premium for those that claim in their first year(s). As it is they almost assume a young driver will claim, and if/when they do they hardly load next year's premium at all! Maybe not in all cases, but that's my and my mates' experience. I've also never had any (financial) benefit from doing Pass Plus and IAM
