Can insurance do what they like with No Claims
Here is the situation....
In Oct 99 I made a small claim, my no claims was protected.
Last Feb I renewed with 6 years no claim..
just before Xmas I wrote off my Scooby, I thought my no claims were still protected, but they weren't.
So I checked before replacing my Scooby and the broker said I would have 3years no claims still and I got a quote of £1000 which I thought was good.
Now I ring to sort out the renewal for later this month and they are saying 0 no claims and as a result the quote is £3000...
Can the insurance company knock 6 years off for a claim?
Any help greatfully received!

Taz,
Bad luck mate.
You really need to check the terms set out in the policy. Are you sure you NCB has always been proected? Losing all of it for one claim seems extreme, but could it be for two claims?
I've had a quick look at my AXA Direct policy. Max NCB is earned after 5 years - any longer a period without a claim doesn't affect the amount of the NCB. I have a recollection that some companies may get you to their max NCB after 4 years (it's a long time since I studied motor insurance I'm afraid!)
Under the AXA policy each claim reduces your NCB by 2 years worth. So with 2 claims you would go from full NCB to 1 years worth. If you get max NCB after 4 years its possible your NCB would go from full down to zip.
If it is protected the norm is that you're allowed two fault claims it any three year period. I don't think that they'd take the protection away just because you'd had a claim.

As far as I was led to believe you could have a maximum of 2 claims in 3 years and still retain your NCD. If you made more claims, then you would loose it all. Like GM said, it depends on your insurance company and their terms.
I spent all of yesterday phoning around (20+ insurers) and they all agreed that you could have 2 claims in 3 years. Perhaps the treat a w/o completely differently.

Well my first claim was when I had protected no claims and the broker are saying that the next year the policy didn't have no claims protection on it.
So I have had two claims within 3years but the first one was protected.
I need to find my terms and conditions and if neccessary get the ombudsman involved.
Wouldn't be such a problem if the broker hadn't told me I'd have 3years noclaims after this claim..... if they had told me 0 no claims I would have bought something cheap and boring for a year or so.

The Broker has confirmed that my no claims were protected for the first claim and that they were not for the second claim therefore I should have 2years no claims.
The policy has been with the same company all along.
They have faxed all the documents to the insurance company showing that the first claim was when they were protected and the second claim they weren't etc..
I just hope they wake up and sort this out.
The issue with the policy changing from protected to not protected I shall deal with later I just want my 2 years no claims at the moment.
