Insurance for a 20yr old
#1
Just registered myself on this fine site as I need some advice.
I am currently driving round in a Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 and paying £580 fully comp. In the summer I would like to upgrade to a Turbo Impreza and was just wondering weather i was chasing an impossible dream as far as insurance was concerned.
When I buy the car I'll be 21 with 3yrs NCB, I live in the home counties and it would be kept in the driveway.
Does anyone know of anyone my age who has managed to get insured ?
All the best - Phil Gooch

Try the Privilege.
I bought my Scooby when I was 20. I am now 21 and my yearly Insurance quote arrived this morning.
I drive a UK 97 Turbo with cover for upto 10% increase in power. I have 5 years NCD and 3 points on my licence. It is kept on the driveway, and is a low risk area.
XS is quoted at £350 (maybe £450 cant remember) and it will cost me £950 fully comp.
When I was 20 and I found it would only cost me £300 extra to change my Rover 200 to a Impreza Turbo, I went straight out and bought one.
Good luck mate. Try phoning the Privilege and if they give you a good price, I wounder how long you can wait till you get one.

Many thanks, if things turn out to be that good then maybe I'll be going shopping in the spring !
I'm not sure my quote will be that low though as a friend has a Corrado VR6 and pays £800+ he lives near me and is 22 with 5yrs NCB.
I'll keep you posted.

Hi Phil,
Its not just insurance that you want to check out its also servicing and running costs. anyone can afford insurance but when it comes to fuel and trust me they do like it alot!! and servicing costs (varies between 90 and 450 pounds) oh and thats 6 month intervals too!!! the last thing you want is to buy a car and not be able to afford to run it tyres too will cost you between 400 and 600 pounds depending on size and make, you will be shocked at the running costs.
Post in general questions board and see how much it will cost you to run your car, on average at 1000 miles per month i put 3 full tanks of fuel in there, mainly motorway and some energetic driving but that equates to nearly 200 quid on fuel alone!!
New tyres have just cost me 520quid, but i expected these expenses when i bought the car. Do lots of homework first! its the best way
Regards
Tony
