Yup illegal if your the car owner and not down as main driver (ie parents are and your under their insurance) they closed this loophole a while back, now classed as fraud and comes complete with a 5 year jail sentence.....

The only way of doing it is to put it under your dads name on a any driver policy. Most insurance companies wont accept a named driver till 25 yrs old.
Try Tesco or CIS (Co-Op)

If you are the owner of the car, you MUST insure it if you use it the most, you also MUST insure it as its your car, your also on the DVLA records as being the owner, your also the person down for the road tax etc etc etc.
Failure to do so, or to deceive WILL lead to a jail sentence of upto 5 years for fraud, i wouldnt take this with a pinch of salt and bad advice that can get you into trouble aint good.....
Now, try the likes of hyperformance, keith michaels, adrian flux and see what they can do for you, tpft for a car worth less than 5k may help but you could end up well out of pocket.

Insuring the car in your parents name is illegal if you own the car.
Even if you put the logbook in your dad's name you will have fun trying to get money in the event of a claim.
Insurer companies aren't as easy to get past as they used to be.
If you had a claim they can come to your house and ask your dad questions about the car which they will expect him to know the answer to. Will check with your neighbours to see who uses the car the most, and will check invoices of any work done to the car to see who the work was invoiced to.
Don't do it mate, you will regret it.
(Not forgeting the fact you won't built up any ncb yourself)

I've been reading into quite a few policys recently and i've noticed a few cropping up where they're saying they advise not to insure in a parents name as if there's any doubt that this kinda thing is going on they wont pay up.

just buy a UK car.
A-Plan quoted me £1195 for a UK spec Turbo 2000 with mods declared, i'm 23 and have 2years ncb (had my full license for 3 but drove my dads car for a year).
When i started out i put my dad as a named driver on my policy for my saxo vts (group 14) which dropped it down for me.. now i have 2yrs ncb i took him off and its fine.
Imprezas seem expensive to insure, i can insure a UK Spec Supra TT for £803.. dont fancy a car that big tho so impreza here i come!
TBH matey imports are not worth bothering with until you are 25 or so, £2.2k insurance is just money you will never ever see again and you are just burning it imo. Of course, if you earn £60k a year then good for you go for it :P
