Red face How to go about insuring a cheap 2nd car

Hello.
Currently own a MY03 STi Type UK which I have had for 3 months. Prior to that I used to own a MY00 Turbo which i had for 2 years.
I am considering buying a 2nd cheap runabout something like a peugeot 205 turbo diesel. Currently seen one with 75,000 miles on the clock on a 94 L plate for £1,125. This is because I am averaging 200 miles a week.

Basically how do you go about insuring a second car? Been told by Liverpool Victoria that I would have to take out a second insurance policy with 0 NCB but they would give me a 1 years NCB as a bonus. But this works out as £565! fully comp or TPF&T on the peugeot. I currently have 10 years NCB on the scoob which will cost me £856 on next renewal. Been told today that some insurance companies will let you use your existing policy and you pay a liitle bit extra (Considering I can only drive 1 car at a time). I will be the only driver of each vehicle. Any Ideas/advice?

Thanks. Jon

I found the only way of doing it was to take out a second insurance policy with 0 ncb. Not with the same insurance company however. They were cheap when it came to my scoob but I shopped around and got the second insurance a lot cheaper elseware

Some companies/policies will take into account your NCB on your first car and give a discount. Very occasionally they can actually 'copy' your NCB, so after the first year you effectively have 10 yrs' (or whatever) on your second car as well as on your first.

That's what happened to me when I bought my Westfield. I already had 7 yrs' NCB on the scooby, but none on a second car. When I sold the Westy 2 yrs later, I let the policy expire and they sent me proof of 9 yrs' NCB that I can use anywhere. Result!

So, now I pay £1200 on my STI, and £150 on my van - a vehicle which has rock hard tyres, no ABS, no airbags, and no grip whatsoever when the road gets even slightly damp. Hm.... which am I more likely to crash?

Cheers Guys. Just rang Admiral and they are offreing me £704.50 for the STi with 10 years NCD and £326.74 with an intorductory 3 years NCD (Because I already claimed for an accident which was my fault 2 years ago) with an accelarated 10 months to get it to 4 years NCB. L&V are quoting my next renewal as £858 for the scoob and £556 with a 1 years NCD introductory for the Peugeot.

Just insured a Micra 1.0 with Kwik Fit for £354 + £30 legal cover (26 years old - new policy with 0 years No Claims) I found confused.com really useful and it saved me a lot of hassle going around the different sites.
Once I build up some no claims on this second policy (touch wood) I will get something bigger and a diesel.

Ayde.

depends whether or not u would think its worth risking it getting nicked, i would buy a cheap car and stick it in a relatives name and drive it around off my own third party cover on my fully comp insurance.

a bit risky, but a 205 diesel aint a huge target for theives.
